Tell me about Jackson Reed this year

Inbound for McCarthur School for 9th but having doubts. How is it going this year?

Fights. Lots of fights.

There is not a lot of fights. Why make that post? The person is clearly looking for info and it is not easy to assess a large school from the outside and there are no tours.

Ignore the people who likely don't send their kids to JR and say the same tired crap...there are not lots of fights, no my kids are not afraid to use the bathroom, no it is not chaos.

JR definitely had some issues with teachers quitting/retiring during the COVID year and hiccups with replacing teachers. It seems mostly resolved, although my kids may just be lucky in their classes/teachers. I know last year they were missing a Physics teacher, though the one they hired mid-last year is excellent (teaches AP Physics I and AP Physics C). Believe AP Environmental Science has been a problem this year.

Not sure what you are specifically asking about.

Two kids at JR, and I agree with all of this. My kids’ teachers this year are all good, although in prior years there have been a few that weren’t great. But you’ll have that variation everywhere.

The reason to choose MacArthur would be for a smaller, more controlled environment. My kids love that JR is big, with tons of activities and lots going on. But if that’s not your kid’s scene, it’s worth considering MacArthur.

This year has been good for my 10 and 12th graders. No issues. Kids are happy to finally be back in a relatively normal school environment. Both are very much enjoying their extra curriculars.

The principal transitions over the past 2 years have not been helpful but fingers crossed the current principal has a handle on things now and will get a jump on hiring so he doesn't have to grapple with vacancies.

Biggest HS in DC is going to be a very different experience from smallest/newest HS. I'd make your decision based on that specific point.

People who want to learn about JR should be aware that there is a very odd group of DCUM trolls who post made up nonsense on literally every JR thread. There was one a while ago where someone was claiming to be a parent, and when called out to answer extremely basic question about what the inside of the school looks like, they answered with incorrect guesses. It’s weird and really not helpful. Just be aware of that when asking questions on this forum.

This is PP. To clarify, these trolls constantly post about fights at JR, except that they usually say “beefs” for some reason. It’s like they learned English watching bad 70s TV.

But yet the parents never reply!

Just had a long thread on this last month. Do we have to do this again?
