Lab School

Rumors are true…. They are definitely stingy with FA! HHI $105k and zero dollars even with another kid in a different private.

It’s the kid in the other private that did you in. SN private is one thing, mainstream is a choice.

wow, that's rough. What will you do?

Did you get in after the initial window? Or are you just posting now?
They do not have deep pockets like other privates and I have found them upfront around being able to offer aid to families accepted during the 1st round.

We got accepted on 3/3 and received aid notification on Friday the 10th. It's almost an insult. I guess they feel if we hit the lottery by Friday 3/17, we can commit. LOL

I understand that they're a smaller school and don't have the pool of money. As far as the question @ 10:36.... We will keep him at his current private and continue our support efforts of OG tutoring and reading pullout.

Honestly, my husband wanted to Love Lab and didn't but I did like it and they're good at what they do. The thought was to look at the FA package and decide whether we would send him there or not. If it were up to me, we would have to get everything done doing the school year but...everything happens for a reason and it's not even an option.

Prayerfully, the pullout we do and tutoring will help. Child not dx with dyslexia but low processing and struggling reader. He is in 1st grade this year so rising 2nd grader.

In all seriousness, are there other financials that are a part of your picture?
HHI $105 and .... with that you are currently paying 1 private school tuition + living in DC? That is 2 parents each making less than $55K.
Are there grandparents that are supporting tuition? Significant savings?
Something else?

They probably have FA (weird how that didn't occur to you in a thread about FA...) but it's irrelevant. The point of the thread is that Lab is stingy with FA even for $105k HHI. When tuition is like $60k. OP doesn't have to share every detail of his/her finances to convey that information.

If HHI is $105 + they have a 2nd home + $2M savings it is absolutely relevant to the FA conversation.
People all the time share only a part of the story and say things like - well I don't want to sell the investment property to pay for my child's school.

Thank you! That is exactly the point. We don't have a fancy house and grandparents help. We get decent aid at their current school.

DP, but don’t you think having a second kid at a private probably played a part? Regardless of the amount of financial aide you received you have a kid in a private school and are trying to get your second child in a special need’s private school. I’d hesitate to give you financial aide as well.

You might have a better chance at aide when your kid is older. Without a diagnosis and being so young, I’d hesitate to give aide especially since you haven’t even tried public school yet.

Having a non SN child in a private is a lifestyle choice. With 105K HHI you probably have one parent staying at home or working part time, this is also viewed as a lifestyle choice. LAB is not known to give out generous financial aid. The school probably thinks that you can re-shuffle your lifestyle choices (like 2nd parent can work or the other child can go to public). I am not saying it's right or wrong, it's just how things shake out in a place like LAB.

We received no financial aid the first year DD attended Lab, but then a significant amount for each subsequent year. Other families have said the same, little or no FA is provided newly admitted students as opposed to current students.
