Stokes middle school rejected

Does anyone know why Stokes didn’t get approved for a middle school?

Oh interesting, I guess the competition for DCI seats won’t be lightening any time soon.

When did they apply?

This is the explanation from the administration: “During our meeting with the DCPCSB, we discovered that the legislation and contractual agreements that helped to create DCI also currently prevent DCI feeder schools from expanding beyond elementary school. Because of this, Stokes School’s previous plans to expand to middle and high school are on hold”. Disappointing!

Wouldn't the Board have had to explain their reasoning? What's it say?

Sounds like it wasn't a public meeting.

I never understood how a school that small was going to operate a middle school anyway, despite their kids having preference at DCI. It would have been a teeny tiny school.

Agree, incredibly disappointing. I understand that restriction may have made sense when DCI first started, but not anymore. Also - Stokes wanted to open something EOTR. Would that seriously be competition for DCI? Doubtful, IMO.

This is so disapointing. THere are many of us in DCPS bilingual schools who would like a shot at a bilingual charter but pretty much have no change because of the feeder rights. Bancroft, Powell, Bruce Monroe etc..all we get is MacFarland and that is a no go.

Our children are at MacFarland Ms "NoGo"

Inspired Teaching's kids don't have preference at DCI.

Are they among the 4% of students who are at grade level in math? Because it's those 22 kids whose parents I wonder about the most.

Shouldn't someone have known that earlier in the process?

For middle school? You can take a fifth grade seat at Mundo Verde or Stokes and have as much of a shot at DCI as anyone else. I agree a small, IT-esque bilingual middle school option would have been nice, but DCPS kids have access if they’re willing to hop schools for fifth and gamble on not totally bombing the lottery for sixth.
