Summer jobs if Aug is not open

Anonymous
Just curious if your teens who do fall sports or band are able to find typical summer jobs. DS rising sr has approached a few options but they want more availability into Aug.

Band starts at the very end of July (and it’s a pretty intense schedule at our school) so at most he could do one weekend shift after that point.

DS has previously worked at camps and doesn’t want to do that this summer.

Why can’t he work afternoons or nights?

I mean my kids all work during high school too. How do they have spending money if they aren’t working?

10-15hrs a week during high school
20-30hrs during summer
10hrs a week during college

Whether he wants to or not, camp might be the best option. Sometimes one choice (band) means that you don't get to do everything else you want too.

band in summer does not take all day or the weekend.

he can work in the evening or on the weekend.

I think the typical thing is not to tell them ahead of time and then when August rolls around, quit. Or maybe they’ll like him enough by then to work around his schedule.

DO NOT DO THIS! Do not leave an employer in the lurch or mislead them about your schedule or your intentions.
What are you teaching your child if you have them do this? Good lord.

NP. Let me introduce you to the concept of at-will employment.

Are they in band, sports, or other similarly time-consuming activities, as per the OP's question?

My 9th grader worked in the snack bar at a pool last summer. It was busy until end of July, then Aug she was facing a cut in hours anyway. So it was no problem to have practice every afternoon then. She kept working evenings and the weekends.

I'm not the OP but band at our school has a very intense schedule that is different every day and varies week to week as well. There are weeks where it is 3.5 hours a break and then back for another 3 hours. There is no way to predict the schedule ahead of time.

The kid can then forget any recommendation from that employer.

Yes, two varsity sports and other clubs. We all had jobs as teens. So why don’t yours? Coddled much

Thus far my kids have worked summer camps. They are also involved in fall sports and they do not get their full schedules until after tryout week. Therefore having an employer that wants your schedule ahead of time is near impossible for the month of August. One of my kids also worked front desk/snack bar of our pool and the pool was fine with him giving a week to week schedule for the month of August. I'd have your kid be up front with an employer and just tell them that the month of August is hard to predict due to summer marching band erratic schedule and have them ask if it would be ok to submit schedule week to week in August.

My child doesn’t need a recommendation from the shift manager at McDonald’s, so I’m all good. This would be the only time they’d work such a job anyway.
