How southern is the Richmond area?

Like many northern virginians, we are thinking of moving to the richmond area. It seems as if the hot spots as of now are in chesterfield county, and parts of western henrico look quite appealing as well. However we are curious as to how southern the area is, and if we’ll experience a culture shock when moving there. we are used to northern virginia southern (aka exurban rural country loco/pw/fauquier style) but definitely are not accustomed to alabama mississippi style southern at all. Any insight would be helpful.

Mechanicsville is very southern. They used to have this festival, called the shuck n pull. It was an oyster roast and tractor pull! In the middle of a field.

Exburban Richmond is more southern than Richmond proper.

Move to NJ, NY, MA, or CT; and then you won't have to concern yourself with anything southern.

Chesterfield, especially near Midlothian and Woodlake, are pretty liberal these days. As is Glen Allen and Short pump. I’d avoid mechanicsville, though.

Mechansville is only 13 minutes from Richmond! What’s so bad about it? Also how is Ashland/Hanover County?

PP who posted about the shuck n pull, its very country! People have southern accents, lots of trucks with guns, etc. Exactly what OP is asking to be warned about!

I live in the city and my polling place has single digits for Republican candidates. Usually the libertarian beats the Republican, and the Democrat gets at least 85%.

You may experience some culture shock in Chesterfield. Western Henrico is a safe bet.

We moved from N. Arlington to Short Pump and the area is liberal and progressive, I'd say much more than Loudoun. We were in LA prior to NoVA. The city (Richmond) is a different world in itself and I can't really describe it. Midlothian is like Ashburn. Mechanicsville is country, and rural VA is frightening. I personally love the city and I find the architecture, history, and quirkiness absolutely amazing but if you want good public schools, suburbia, big houses, chain grocery stores etc. look in neighborhoods that feed into Deep Run HS.

I can't believe people think that Richmond is ultra conservative. To me, Rest in Pieces perfectly describes the city's vibe.
