Is it similar to Burke and Springfield?
I don't like Lorton, but then I don't like Burke or Springfield, either.
No. I hate it. Though I do like the area near pohick bay.
Compared to Burke and Springfield, Lorton has newer housing, fewer SFH neighborhoods, lower performing schools, slightly longer commutes to major employment centers, and slightly fewer amenities like restaurants.
No. I grew up in dc. Lorton was where the DC jail was as well as the dump. Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me.
It’s cheap for the suburbs. On every other thread, people say buy what you can afford even if you hate it. |
It’s near Occoquan Park, which I love, and the Workhouse has some cool stuff.
The area near pohick bay is rather nice. But it is far from anything else.
Any home tucked away in the suburbs of Lorton overall will feel indistinguishable to the rest of the lower half of Fairfax County. Schools are fine there. Seriously. While Burke area has Burke Lake and Bull Run, Lorton has the Meadowood/Mason Neck/Pohick bay areas for walking. Lots of Fort Belvoir workers around the area.
I cant get past the Lorton jail stigma
The jail is now a nice park with art galleries and frisbee golf, but the dump and the area around it haven't changed.
No. Suburban wasteland.
Lorton is fine, a bit remote from most amenities and a healthy commute to most employment centers. It's relatively safe, and has good infrastructure and public services, including schools, fire, police, and EMS. No high-rise buildings or big shopping centers, which many consider an advantage, but also a limited range of local restaurants. Good access to parks.
Impossible commute up I-95 if you work in DC or Arlington, Alexandria, McLean etc.
It's not similar to Burke and is in very close proximity to Springfield, if you like that area. The prison has been repurposed with art galleries and there is quite a bit of retail development happening within what was formerly the interior grounds. As others have said, there are good parks close by. There is a section of Lorton that is close to and off of 123 that has larger houses in a less dense space, and less of a Lorton feel, than near the prison. The schools are FCPS and the middle and high school are new, which is nice. The landfill is scheduled to be closed soon and is slated to be taken over by Alpine X and will become Fairfax Peak, which is a year round indoor ski and winter arena. This will likely bring better services to the area along with more jobs. It will, in turn, make property values go up, bu the traffic is alredy pretty bad on Lorton Road, and if that is not addressed will be a total nightmare. As for commuting, there is an easily acessable HOT lane if you can afford it and need to get to Tysons, etc. If commuting to DC, the VRE has a station there and it is very reliable and stressfree.
