I fell into the Talbots and Chicos hole and I tend to buy styles that greatly age me. I end up looking aged.
What do people my age wear? Where do they shop? Photos would be great, links too! |
| I’m 40 and have a ton of friends 35-40. Many shop at Madewell. I personally wear athleisure almost every day, which I don’t recommend as a style choice. |
| Ha! I did this! I like Talbots for basics but have bought more fresh trendy tops from TJ Maxx or somewhere cheap. You can balance it out and look reasonable, I think. |
NP- I am also 40 and I used to love Madewell but now, I think everything looks weird, which probably means I'm too old for it! I need another go-to also! I can't wear such trendy stuff anymore without looking pathetic. |

In my mid-late 40s I went through a Talbots phase because the store was convenient. I didn’t have to deal with a mall or order online and guess at sizes. I bought dresses, slacks and tops I could wear to work, and avoided all their floral pastel stuff.
But I frequently ended up feeling frumpy in these clothes. The dresses could have been an inch shorter. The cut of the sweaters could have been more flattering. I think I was wearing the right size - I’m a 10/12 at most stores, but sometimes an 8 at Talbots. On the other hand, I recently bought slacks from another store where my teen daughter shops. They were a little stretchy with a flare - normally a small flare is flattering on my body type. But when I wore them to work, I felt ridiculous. What I thought was a small flare in the store was a bigger flare at work and the pants were too tight. It was a fail. I would experiment with stores, and when you find the store that works and you feel confident in their clothes, stick with it! |
| Thanks PPs I love hearing that I am not alone. |
I'm almost 50 and I usually love Madewell but the stuff they've been showing this season is making it much easier to break my Madewell addiction! For OP - I mean, what do I know, I'm a generation older - but give a look at Madewell, J Crew, Evereve, & other stories, Jungmaven (I got that rec from DCUM and have become a huge fan of their t-shirts), Reformation (if you have that Hot Girl look - I do not so I don't shop there), Aritzia, Anthropologie (to me, Anthro is mostly overpriced with weird fabrics, but I know a lot of people love it and look great, so). Boden, if you're selective and don't get the frumpy stuff. If you have more $$$ to spend try Veronica Beard (I don't have VB money, personally), Farm Rio, Vince, and those higher-priced brands. I sometimes get the nicer stuff on Poshmark and eBay - I also get a lot of Madewell on eBay. |

You can follow the bloggers “the mom edit” - it’s a group of 40ish women who wear modern clothes. There are several people who each have their own style and body shape.
If you like mall basics like Talbots and Chicos - Try Everlane, Quince, Madewell, J Crew. Boden and Amour Vert also some good stuff - but you have to know what look you are going for because they can both also carry older looking item. |
Slightly off topic but where is the best TJ Maxx around here? The Friendship Heights location was my go-to. |
| I am 47 and I would never wear anything from Talbots other than a t-shirt. Aritzia, COS, Lafayette 148, Club Monaco... Much better cut and more stylish clothes. |
| I am also 37 and get compliments at work on my outfits semi regularly. I shop at Boden (dresses), Brass, everlane, quince, Zuri, and Ann Taylor. |
| Look up evereve and their look book or boxes. It’s specifically for 30-50yos. It’s over priced for basics (like I’d never buy a tank or tshirt there) but is great for on trend for the age group things |
I'm 42 and love Veronica Beard, found a few pieces at second hand shops and from their website, they mark down by a LOT during sales. Their clothes are flattering. I buy a lot of work clothes from Reformation. They look cool but somehow work in work/conference/presentation settings. I have two excellent blazers -- a structured woolen fitted Diane Von Furstenberg and a silky and flippy Reiss. both thrifted but in excellent condition. They make everything underneath look good. Thrifted things came from either secondi or thredup (I always look for new with tags) |
| Madewell, j. Crew, Anthropologie, boden |
| Look at AYR. Basics elevated . Love them. |
