| What shoes did your child wear for Outdoor Ed? Son will be going later this Spring and it sounds like they’ll need two pairs of shoes that are good for hikes and can get wet or muddy. Kid only owns one pair of shoes right now (nice Nikes that he doesn’t want to ruin) because his feet keep growing. He doesn’t have any “old sneakers” because he outgrew them. Any suggestions for appropriate shoes that aren’t $50 a pair? Men’s size 7 (which is also a tricky size in an of itself). |
Go to Ross or Marshals to purcase some cheap shoes. |
This. Or try the new Dick's Warehouse next to the Buy Buy Baby on Rockville Pike. The store isn't very nice but they have a huge selection of cheap kids shoes. |
| Not much "hiking" - some walking and running around. Water boots are provided for wading. A cheapo pair will work fine. |
We took a 4 mile hike on steep terrain, mostly on an unpaved road, when the ground was very wet and a misty rain was falling. The kids also had to run around in a wet field and the woods for a game. I agree that you don’t need expensive shoes, but the kids who wore shoes that weren’t waterproof at all were pretty miserable. Even if they had extra socks to change into, if they had to put their wet shoes back on, they still ended up with wet feet. |
I bought one size too big inexpensive hiking shoes/low boots that were waterproof. I also sent them with old sneakers. I think DC only wore their sneakers. However, they had good weather for outdoor ed. It might have been different if there was rain and the ground was muddy. I wouldn't send a kid with shoes they don't want to ruin. If I recall a men's size 7 is equivalent to a boys size 7. If you buy boys sizes, they probably will cost less. |
| When DD did outdoor ed, they said to wear bread bags over feet inside old shoes. They said this was very effective at keeping feet dry. |
Same here. |
| I’m really curious about what kind of waterproof shoes would be helpful here. A keens water shoe? A waterproof hiking boot? I don’t have a kid headed to outdoor ed yet. Mine are in 4th and 2nd. I did outdoor ed through mcps when I was in sixth grade. My recollection was that the conditions were not comfortable, but I don’t remember why. |
| Thrift stores have a ton of boots and shoes |
| If your child is bringing brand new hiking boots, please have them break them in first. I just came back from chaperoning and so many kids had brand new boots and blisters from them. |
