Not much "hiking" - some walking and running around. Water boots are provided for wading. A cheapo pair will work fine.
We took a 4 mile hike on steep terrain, mostly on an unpaved road, when the ground was very wet and a misty rain was falling. The kids also had to run around in a wet field and the woods for a game. I agree that you don’t need expensive shoes, but the kids who wore shoes that weren’t waterproof at all were pretty miserable. Even if they had extra socks to change into, if they had to put their wet shoes back on, they still ended up with wet feet.
