Where Can A 91 GPA Student From St. Alban's Go?

Anonymous
My son has a 91 GPA at 1540 SAT at St. Alban's.

Are Ivies/Stanford/Duke realistic for him, or should he aim lower?

Also, what GPA is usually cum laude?

You cross posted but here so my answer from the other forum.

As to cum laude, I think it is top boys rather than a GPA cut-off so many vary class to class.

From other forum:
This spring, the counseling office will give you info on where kids with that gpa were admitted. That test score is pretty on par with other STA kids in that GPA range. They pretty much all have 35/1540+.

Very broadly (and assuming AP classes and at least AP AB calc), Chicago is likely an option ED but I would focus on schools in the 15 - 40 range unless also has some major awards, athletic recruitment etc.

Should have great options!

STA doesn’t rank but I don’t think a 91 would be too 10% of class, or even that close to top 10%.

Maybe talk to a college counselor rather than an anonymous message board? Just a thought.

I don't know your kid's profile obviously, so anything can happen, but the Ivies/Stanford/Duke kids that I know of from STA are pretty exceptional students. A 91 is very strong but not likely top of class.

Do they give you access to a scattergram on SCOIR? It allows you to look at individual schools and see the stats and results of others at your school who have applied there and plots your students stats in as well so you can easily compare.

Doesn't STA have a good college counseling office? Or are parents on their own or hire private counselors?

Depends - student of color? Athlete? My white son had 95 GPA from all honors and AP classes at another private and 35 on ACT and waitlisted/denied at ivies. Great boy, independent research, high level athlete but didn’t want to play in college. But he couldn’t be happier at his college right now. Just need to find the place that really wants your son and he should be happy!

Can you share what college your child attends?

Are you sure he is at that school? It is Saint Albans (not Alban's)!!!!

Hi,
the Ivies and Stanford are a different league than Duke. Duke is tough, a great school, but is more realistic for students in his grade/STA than the Ivies or Stanford (or MIT if he were interested). The acceptance rate at Duke is low, but it does not get nearly the same quality of applicants that the Ivies get.

We were very happy with the CCO. We didn’t hire outside counselor. Son in early at top choice school

May I ask whether you worked with NMM or TH?

My only data point is a kid with just below a 90 and a similar SAT who was successful ED2 at Chicago, white, non-athlete, full pay. So I think PP above probably has accurate take. 15-40 probably reasonable, but would need to know rigor and other factors.
