| Should we try now or wait later, or wait next year? |
|
Is your kid currently in 8th grade? 9th is a bigger entry year than 10th, so I would try now but have very low expectations as most "competitive" schools will likely have already filled spots from the first round. However, applying this year, and then again next year will show you are very interested and may help you next time.
Curious, why did you wait until now to think about applying to private? |
| 9th is an entry year, but decisions come out tomorrow so it's too late in the process for most schools. I'd wait a couple of weeks and then start calling around and see if anyone is anticipating having openings. |
| Basis may have openings for HS. I would call them now. |

I think it will be a long shot for 9th unless you have a compelling reason as to why you just decided this now. The privates have plenty of strong math kids so it's not likely they will make an exception for your child just due to their math prowess alone.
I would be able to clearly articulate why you feel you need private now and start calling schools in a few weeks to see if they will accept a late application. If you have a son with quick processing speed, maybe try St. Anselms Abbey. I believe they are less stringent on admissions deadlines as they are looking specifically for students with this. Separately, there is a vocal contingent on this board who feel public math is stronger than private. I personally think that's debatable, but if math is truly your kids "thing", you may find more class options in public depending on which privates you are considering. Good luck! |
Lol “may.” |
Have heard great things about St. Anselms Abbey. |
How about try to help people instead of being obnoxious |
|
Did you apply to TJ?
My son was an AAP 8th grader and most of these schools here don’t care about AAP. They look at your kids grades and see how they fair on admissions testing. |
| Basis is a good school if you want rigor. |
Basis will have openings but don't call them. They have openings for a reason. |
Not PP but think the "may" post is very helpful. Obnoxious is all the Basis trolls here. |
Basis is very good for academics. Just not the best for extracurriculars. |

OP - did you know decisions are coming out tomorrow (or came out last week for arch diocese)?
I would reach out to all the schools you are interested in to see what they say. I suspect most of the highly competitive won't even take an application now and will tell you to try next year. I would not bring up your child's math prowess. This would not be a tipping point for them to bend their normal process. In fact, be very thoughtful about what your child would be able to take, as some private schools are very restrictive in how/whether they accommodate students outside their typical math track. But I'd wait to ask that AFTER they say you can send in an application and maybe ask after accepted. |
| We want to learn whether we should apply now to get on a waitlist or wait until June? |
