We are trying to visit some colleges this summer that are not too competitive to get into. I want my son to visit some potential safeties. I told my son that he should not apply to any colleges that he would not be happy at.
His current list includes UPenn, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, UVA, Swarthmore, Tufts, BC and BU. He is a high stats student so he should be able to get into UVA, Tufts, BC and BU but I know that is not guaranteed. What are some good potential safeties With strong science programs? I thought we should visit Penn State, UMD, Pitt, Emory, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. I’m aware that the last three are highly selective but I thought he may be interested. |
Clark University |
I don’t think any high stats kid should count on UVA or U Penn anymore. |
UPenn is an ivy. Penn State has a 50+ % acceptance rate. |
Penn State is the only safety on that list. UMD if he’s in like the top 5% of a Maryland public school would also be a safety, otherwise would be likely match. Since it seems like he’s into mid sized universities, maybe look into Lehigh and William & Mary. Both are probably good targets that if he’s a strong student he’s likely to get into. Many of the schools you’re listing aren’t even targets, but reaches. |
Yes, but OP said UPenn |
Rice, Tulane, UNC |
William & Mary, Pitt, Juniata |
What state do you live in op? How old is your student? Test scores? Gpa? |
Kalamazoo |
Case Western and Pitt |
UMiami and UDenver |
The idea is a good GPA and a stellar MCAT. No need to kill yourself at the undergrad level. Consider VCU. Might even like it enough to consider med school there. |
Surprisingly, Baylor has a really good pre med program. |
Rice has a program that you can get into medical school straight from Rice. |
