not too expensive assisted living in maryland?

Anonymous
I'm sure this has been asked many times, but the search function is glitching for me (after the first page of results it says 0 results)... so sorry about that....

We are beginning the search for assisted living for a parent in Maryland. She's currently in independent living but the $10K per month for assisted living at her current place is just too much. Do folks know of options in a lower price range (maybe 4-6K per month)? I wish we could do the really nice ones, but I don't know if we can stretch so much.

Sorry OP here - I realize there's probably nothing in the 4K range, meant to put 5-6K

My dad was at Tribute at Black Hills in Germantown. There is another Cadence facility in Olney.

It was around that price for assisted living. I was very please with his level of care and the overall community.

Choose a place that accepts Medicaid (for eventual payment)

I have my mom at Raphael House at Rockville MD. It's $7500 a month. Cheaper than 10000. It is a small place and has low staff turnover. I highly recommend them because the staff and director are very dedicated and loving. It is a non profit which is a plus. Let me know if you choose this place.

Look for home-based businesses. They are embedded in communities. Montgomery County, at least, maintains a database of them. They generally do not handle anyone who is too bad off, though.

Medicaid only pays for skilled nursing care and sounds like your mom doesn’t need that yet? My dad is in a Medicaid long term care facility after spending down all his assets. It’s over $12,000 per month but the state pays most of it. He pays his social security towards it and state pays the rest.

You can get 4K if you are okay with a small home based facility.

Even if she doesn't need it YET, skilled nursing, get into a place that will eventually accept Medicaid

Medicaid does not pay for assisted living.

+1 Try A Place for Mom for options.

We know Medicaid doesn't pay for assisted living. Still, move into a place that accepts Medicaid for what will lively happen down the road.

OP has a small budget and ALs that provide for transition to SNF are not likely in the budget.

Look at the Alfred Houses in MoCo, my mother was in one. I think they are around 6k a month? They are well run and I found the staff compassionate and responsive.

It's nothing fancy though, no bells or whistles.
