We have a 5th grader in an APS school who is really into their sport and we are looking to make a commitment next year that would be very time consuming.
We are unclear about how much homework and grading will change in middle school (we are zoned for DHMS). DS is a conscientious student, advanced math track for next year, and all As now. But that’s elementary which has been fairly easy and very little homework or even assigned books to read. In 6th and 7th, how much homework can we expect, how many assigned books to read each semester, any projects? We will be driving a lot and sadly he gets sick while reading in the car so need to strategize if this is a good path for us. |
Maybe you should homeschool if sports are that important to you. |
I think there is very little in middle school. |
Not an option, and honestly I’m very on fence for sport, spouse is pushing it so I want to know what we are signing up for. |
I heard they have about 4 assigned novels a year to read? |
Weren't there more posts here originally? |

DHMS mom here - while there is homework 6th grade is focused on getting the kids to organize and study. The grades don’t count but do reflect whether the kid is working on those two elements. Since the school day ends around 2:45, that’s plenty of time to study before evening sports. The first semester of middle school will be a transition but 2nd half is going swimmingly! Good luck! |
What does it mean if the homework doesn’t count? If it isn’t checked and graded what is the consequences for not doing it |
My DD had quite a bit of homework in MS especially right before winter break and the end of grading periods. She went to SMS. |
Oh thanks. I am so confused |
Similar situation and we specifically chose to stay in APS (over private) because of the lower homework requirements. |
Our kid doesn't get everything done during the day so she brings some home. Some of it definitely counts towards the final grade. |
OP is in good company. Most APS parents are way more chill than FFX parents, and no homework matches with their expectations and importance of sports. There are very few tiger moms in APS, and just because it has far fewer Asian families than is typical for the region |
What a racist thing to say. |
