I have been reading this forum and it’s so helpful, but am wondering if anyone has specific suggestions. My dad is 85 and has Parkinson’s. He was moved to an assisted living in January and he took a fall a few days ago- this caused a head injury. He’s currently in recovery at the hospital , and will be going to rehab next - but I’m talking to the doctors they feel he needs SNF. The social worker has been awful to deal with- she keeps telling my 80 year old mother to take him home- we tried everything before the assisted living (in home care, nurse aids) but the cost of that 24/7 wasn’t possible and my mom ended up doing it all and she just can’t anymore it was killing her. We have contacted the “best” Skilled nursing and we got a 17k a month quote and that’s just too much for us. has anyone had experience with SNF in Alexandria area? I know we can’t afford the Bentley of Skilled nursing, but are there no middle level options that would still be nice?Am I just looking for something that doesn’t exist? My parents had me later in life - I have 3 young kids at home and a full time job, not to mention our split level wouldn’t be an option for my dad - I’m also the first of my friend group to go thru this so appreciate any advice. |
Get a social worker involved to help you.

She's already had a terrible experience with a social worker. I'm sorry OP, I don't have any specific recommendations. I will tell you that $17k a month is a STEAL--my parents were quoted twice that several years ago. |
My Dad (also Parkinsons) was paying $600 a day and needed extra private care on the side. Its very difficult. Hope you can find what he needs. There is Medicaid support after their assets are spent down if you do not find another option. |
I’m sorry you’re going through this, OP. I know how very hard it is. If you haven’t already, I suggest consulting an elder care attorney that specializes in spend down for Medicaid. They can help you and your Mom protect assets like the marital home. Also, you can prepay funeral expenses to help spend down assets to qualify for Medicaid as well as purchase medical equipment, clothing, personal care items, etc.
With how crazy expensive skilled care is, most families can’t private pay for very long. You need to protect your Mom so she continues to have a place to live and is not impoverished. |
Hospital social workers just want to get patients out as quickly as they can to free up beds. Contact the hospital’s patient advocate if you feel that he is being discharged too quickly or if you aren’t satisfied with the discharge options. |
I’ve heard good things about Greenspring in Springfield but I don’t have any firsthand experience. My Dad was in Fairfax Nursing a few years ago, and I thought the physical therapy he received was good but rooms were very small and it seemed crowded. Not bad for a short rehab, but I’m not sure how it would be for an extended stay. |
I’ve seen these people recommended here before. I’d reach out to them and see what places they would suggest looking into. |

My dad spent some time at Woodbine in Alexandria after a hospital stay. I am not sure what level of services they offer. It may just be rehab. They took good care of him and I don't have any complaints.
The social worker there recommended Owl Be There to help find him a place. They were very helpful in finding an assisted living facility for him. I imagine that they might be able to help you find a SNF. They set up virtual visits with a handful of places. |
My mother who had Alzheimers was at a home based assisted living. There are quite a few you can search under department of health because they have to be licensed the same way a facility would be. Our mother was at one of the Avalon locations. It was 6k a month a few years ago. She needed a high level of care too. We were at Sunrise precious to this location which was much more expensive, but still similar level of care.

Also- if he is still recovering from the hospital Medicare should cover the initial recovery at a SNF (at least partially) for 30 days or so as long as he needs “skilled nursing”. Long term nursing home placement is called custodial care- where they just can’t live at home anymore because they are so dependent on others for their ADLs. |
Here is the Medicare info on SNF coverage- he needs to go directly from the hospital as well

I believe woodbine offers this? I hear nothing but good things about them |
There’s a Sunrise in Old Town that has memory care, I’m not sure if they offer what you need. |
