Front License Plates

Anonymous
Are front license plates no longer required in VA? I know a lot of people say they impede the new capabilities of certain cars. However, Telsa specifically says on their website the license plate holders (and it's area) will not impact self driving or any safety feat ure. Just looking around my parking lot at work - I think about 50% have plates on the front. Various models etc not just hybrid. I also drove back from NC last weekend and noticed hardly anyone has a front plate.

No, they are required - people just choose to take their chances without them. Which is what I did until DC parking meter maids started ticketing me for it, so I installed one on the front of my Tesla using one of those no drill kits. I think it actually made it look better than without!

They are required. No front plates is a Maryland thing. Because, obviously.

This again...

VA requires them. But many cops don't enforce.

They’d re required in va and you can get a ticket for not having one you have it, you are just too lazy to put it on the car.

When I received my new Tesla - it had the front tags installed. Why do people take them off?

Not all states require a front license plate. For example, Pennsylvania.

When I got my Tesla in Virginia, the front plate and plate holder was sitting in the trunk not installed. I imagine that's more common than having them installed at delivery.

A front plate is required in Va. It's not uncommon for owners of more expensive cars to not install them, though, to preserve the design integrity of their vehicles. Not displaying a front plate is a secondary offense, meaning you will only be cited for it in conjunction with some other traffic offense - you won't be stopped for the absence of a front plate alone. As a practical matter, unless you antagonize an officer, it's unlikely you'll ever get any grief for this relatively trivial offense.

Yep. Same with WV. As far as I know, every other Mid-Atlantic state, DC included, requires a front plate. Maybe not Delaware, though. Not sure on that one.

Delaware does not require a front license plate. Neither does West Virginia.

I assume you are a DC resident otherwise it’s hard to believe the DC parking enforcement wrote a ticket for an out of state car missing front plates.

When I purchased my last car I had the dealer install the front plate holder and they grumbled about it ruining the look of the car.

Nope VA. I park very often on the streets of DC so didn’t want to risk any further tickets.

I got a ticket for not updating my VA registration tags on my plate while parked in DC for an hour. It was during covid and I’d forgotten for months, and never been caught in VA since I wasn’t driving often.
