SUNY schools — why aren’t they as popular as other OOS schools

Some of the SUNY schools, Stonybrook, Binghamton, Geneseo, Buffalo, Oswego, all seem like opportunities to get great educations plus they give merit money to OOS. Why aren’t they more popular?

Go Seawolves! As a New Yorker who graduated from the SUNY system I’ll definitely be considering them for my kids. It’s a great system.

Some kids from this area go to SUNY-Binghamton. And doesn't New Paltz have a good reputation for performing arts?

But overall the SUNY schools don't have very attractive campuses and are in cold locations in towns that aren't exactly thriving. Who'd want to live there if many of the kids at those schools are going home on the weekends? You could have a similar experience at UMBC or George Mason and the weather would be better.

I have always wondered about this too. They are a great value, even for out-of-state residents. Weather might be a factor, but plenty of people from the DMV choose SLACs and some out-of-state publics in cold climates.

So many good schools! If DCUM doesn't care about them, fine ... more opportunity for others!

Because they're in Stonybrook, Binghamton, Geneseo, Buffalo, and Oswego. Have you spent Sept-May in these places? They have three seasons: June, July, August, and winter.

Same! DH is a UB grad and we’re excited about the SUNY options for our kids once they hit that age. They’re a great value.

I definitely think location is a factor for some of the campuses.

My daughter is really into the arts and we have SUNY Purchase on our list. Seems like a great school!

I would agree with the prior poster. The campuses are old and not very pretty. So I think if you are looking from OOS they may not attract alot of attention. The education at Stony Brook is the best of all the schools.

Not exactly thriving is an understatement. A lot of upstate NY is downright crummy. DH was being recruited at Hamilton, and just could not deal with the area. It's depressing there.

But those schools generally have better academic reputations, more interesting architecture, more thriving towns and/or more students who aren't commuters.

I mean you could equally ask why more DMV students aren't going to Penn State's regional campuses. The answer is because they don't want to and have better options.

New Palms for visual arts. Purchase for performance/dance.

I wouldn’t agree - Binghamton and Geneseo probably tie.

I think it’s because there is no flagship to bring in OOS kids.

I will disagree with you if you suggest that the SUNY schools named above are on par with Penn State's regional campuses. That's not accurate at all - the SUNY schools are much better. I'll give you the bad architecture, though.

Geneseo is as lovely as any campus, anywhere.
