| OK DCUM wisdom, here's the situation. Bought a new car. Dealership has applied for new tags and title. Now that I have new car I am planning on selling old car (probably to Carvana). Once I sign the title over to whomever I sell to, how can I get my old plates transferred to the new car? Will I have to wait for the new tags and registration from DC DMV to be delivered to the dealership in order to do it? |
| Are you talking about personalized tags? Just go to the DMV near Half st and the emissions station. They will have you in and out with no follow up. But you will need your title. |
While I appreciate that you have provided me the location of a DMV office, that isn't actually an answer to the question. (Not personalized. But I would like to keep my old license plate #.) |
| Just transfer the tag. Why did you pay for new tags instead of a temp on the new car though? |
We still have old car for a few more days. Was told by dealership that they could not transfer them. DC allows stand-alone temp tags for used cars. For new, I believe they need to be issued as part of the application process for new tags. |
Just like this person said. Since you already have a new tag coming you need to get that tag and go to the SW DMV with both tags. They will switch it out for you with your old tag and reissue your registration sticker on the spot. I think that the person who answered before was alluding to the fact that if any questions come up at a normal DMV, all of the supervisors everybody is on the phone with actually work there. So they can solve your situation. Other locations they will file a question and send you home telling you that they will call you back. They wont. Just take your new tags and registration, with your old tag to the SW DMV. (Don't forget your title and ID) |
| I have always had the dealership transfer them |
