U. Miami neighborhood

Heading to University of Miami for a tour with DS. Only three people max can attend the tour, so DS and either DH or I will go on the tour, while one of us stays behind with DD who is 15. Are there places to walk around, shop, eat, etc. walking distance from campus while they tour? We both want to at least see the campus so do not want to stay behind at the hotel with DD.

Why not do a self-guided tour with DD15? Then you can compare notes with those on the official tour:

Just sign up for a tour for your 15 year old. They can start touring early. Also, no school where we’ve toured has checked the number of people in our group. Some tours we could have just walked right into without checking in (ie UVA has online checkin).

I am hoping that happens and she can just join. We are touring a bunch of schools in April and will be dealing with the same issue. Feel bad signing her up and taking a potential spot from a junior or senior who might really want to tour but maybe I should get over that and just sign her up.

U of Miami campus is really pretty for walking around, so the self-guided tour idea is good. There's a small lake and canals with water birds, and you might even see iguanas. There's a Starbucks and other fast food type places on campus and lots of outdoor seating. The neighborhood around campus is bordered on one side by US1 and is otherwise residential. South Miami is a walkable area that is sort of near campus but not really walking distance.

Expensive. Be prepared to pay out the wazoo for off campus housing.

Check out Coconut Grove neighborhood.

My friend's daughter is going there in the fall, but my friend was NOT a fan of the campus or surrounding area. She felt it was too much of a constant party. But again, that is just her opinion.

It may get dicey if you wander outside of the area of shops and restaurants FYI. But yes it's a very close drive from school and good suggestion. You cannot walk to the Grove.

There are places to eat right across the street from the university metrorail station. I recommend Bagel Emporium. https://www.bagelshopmiami.com/

I’m confused. Two parents, two kids. Can’t you all sign up? Separately? One parent with each kid?

You are college touring with both kids.

OP here- yes we could, but again, she is only a freshman and do not want to take a potential spot away from a Junior or senior who wants to tour- they fill up quickly. We will just play it by ear and see if she can join or just wander the campus. She would also likely enjoy plopping down on the grass with a Starbucks and working on her tan

The campus is beautiful, and not in an Ivy League college sort of way. Palm trees instead of ivy. Sunshine instead of snow. Lakes and outdoor pools instead of clock towers. Beautiful new white & glass modern student center instead of well, you remember your student center. Happy, smiling students not all rushing anxiously to the library or study group. Different people like, need, thrive, are admitted to, different types of colleges. Imagine.
