What pathway after Honors Geometry in 8th grade?

Anonymous
Why is my student’s teacher giving them like 4 options including retaking it?

What is the normal pathway for the majority of the students? She has an A if that matters

Honors Algebra 2
Honors Precalc
AP Calc AB or BC
AP Stats or Multivariate

There are different options, but the teacher usually recommend one for the student

H Algebra II is what most kids are going to take.

+1 and it can be quite difficult so child just needs to be prepared to do more than in geometry
My kid is in it now and struggled but has turned it around. And was a A student like yours last year in 8th

As others have said, the usual path is Honors Algebra II.

Kinda crazy to me that the teacher would suggest retaking Geometry...

Students should really assess their math ability and foundation before taking Honors Alg 2 because this is where the rubber meets the road. I definitely recommend all students do a review before Honors Alg 2. (don’t know why schools don’t just integrate Geometry and Alg 2 into a single class taught over 2 years.)

That's a great idea.

I don't see how retaking geometry is going to help you with algebra II. It only puts you another year away from algebra concepts. My guess is that they recommend repeating geometry for kids who don't care about taking math classes beyond calculus BC. it is an opportunity to "pull back" from that highest level math track.

I've seen it done for kids whose parents thought they needed to slow the kid's math progression down for many reasons.

I think that would in very specific circumstances, but a general "yeah and you kids can retake Geometry..."?

DS, who isn't too hot in math, took Honors Algebra II, Honors Pre-Calc, AP Calc AB and finally this year, AP Calc BC. He could also have taken AP Calc BC without the AB, and AP Stats, but warning: BC is VERY difficult. Teacher quality matters a lot
for understanding. Don't hesitate to get a tutor, especially since the pandemic really did a number on math instruction in MCPS.

^ also the College Board is rolling out AP Pre-calc. I don't know when it will be available in MCPS.

My kid did Honors Algebra 2, Pre Calculus, Calculus with Applications, AP Calc BC.

Don't know why folks don't elect to take stats, AP or not. It's much easier for most than equivalent-level courses like pre-calc (non-AP) or Calc A/B or B/C (AP), but so much more useful in life.
