My nanny got in a car accident this afternoon after dropping one of our kids at a class. She rear ended someone who she says stopped short to avoid hitting a pedestrian who was walking against the light. The police came to write it all up.
I assume the accident is going to be deemed our fault since she rear ended someone else. This was in our car of course, and the damage is mostly to the front and it isn’t great - DH thinks will probably cost $5K to repair. Nanny says the other person’s car wasn’t too bad that’s her opinion. I am worried the other pet How does this all work - since she was driving while on the job I assume we are fully responsible for everything? She is on our insurance but not sure if that matters. |
This is the cost of business. Yes, you're responsible. Tell her going forward, to leave more space between her and the car in front of her, so if a car stops short she has more space to stop without hitting them. |
It’s your responsibility, yes. |
Your insurance company will pay to get your car fixed if you have collision coverage (less your deductible). |
Yep your insurance will pay. $5k isn’t insignificant. If that’s your car, I’d assume the car she hit will have a few thousand as well. Even a broken light can be $1000. |
Stop assuming that she was following too closely. The car in front came to abrupt stop and rear ending can easily happen. |
I’m going to assume she already knows this and doesn’t need to be condescended to. |
Is your nanny okay? Was she injured? |
This has happened to me. I still consider it my fault for tailgating. Since she had just dropped your kid off, I’d pay the deductible. We’ve had Live in Nannie’s use our car off-hours and have an accident or other car incident that was their fault, and we typically had them pay part of a deductible. This was for big accidents and not minor dents which we ignored. |
Your insurance will pay. You will have a deductible. Your insurance will also pay for the other vehicle repairs. Hopefully no one was hurt. If your nanny was hurt then your workers comp carrier will pay. |
Ummm if you hit the car you were following too closely. |
That means she was too close. |
She was following too closely if she hit the car. |
Any chance she was on her phone? |
