Sidwell GDS and Michigan

Do most accepted students attend? Still back up for T20? Tough year for admissions.

Did anyone get in?

Actually did anyone get in from any top DC private? I don't know of any.

Yes, kids got in. Ones we know of are top students.

Is Michigan now an Ivy-level (or harder) admit in the DMV?

My kid is a 3.9+ Big3 junior and it's currently her top choice and that of several friends who are also very strong students (all in the top math and science classes, etc). I wonder if any will get in next year.

Kids get admitted every year. Don’t have to be at a “big 3”.

Of course, but this thread is about Michigan admissions from Big3 schools. Did you even read the title?

Michigan is a very popular school in this area which makes it hard to get in.

EA Decisions came out on Friday. Takes some time to digest and interpret the data.

For GDS, of the schools posted to insta 2022 and 2021, Michigan was the #1 highest school GDS kids went to across those two classes (caveat: not everyone posted to insta 2021, most kids did 2022).

But even if this is a pretty good sampling, and assuming typical Michigan yield of about 50%, then I'm guessing 10 acceptances per year +/- (with big error bar and assumptions above)

2021 and 2022
University of Michigan 8
Tufts 7
Wash U 7
Brown 6
NYU 6
Duke 5
Cornell 4
Harvard 4
Macalaster 4
Tulane 4
University of Toronto 4
University of Wisconsin 4
Boston College 3
Georgetown 3
UPenn 3
University of Chicago 3
Wesleyan 3
Yale 3

How many per year do you think apply? I would imagine a good proportion of the kids do who don't not match with ED elsewhere do (?)

U of M is pretty much in the middle is that list. Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Penn, Duke, Cornell, Brown and Wash U - All harder to get into. Georgetown, Tufts and NYU may also be more competitive.

Out of state acceptance rate is around 18 percent now. (Well last year at least)

Let’s say that GDS or Sidwell have 50 percent higher acceptance rate. That might be wrong BTW. So their acceptance rate is 22.5% - if one assume 10 acceptances per year then 45 kids a year are applying for those 10 spots. That’s 1/3rd of the GDS class I think.

All of these numbers have big error bars around them of course.

And yes, I think every SCEA and EA kid applied to U of M as well. Or many of them. Of course a number of those get into their dream SCEA or EA and need to or will withdraw from U of M. So perhaps in reality 30 kids are competing for those 10 acceptances per year.

Some Michigan booster here is always trying to pretend Michigan is tougher to get into than it is. Are you related to the UVA booster. They both are state schools- nothing more nor less.

No idea what this means. I’m the one who posted the stats. They are what they are. Less selective than ivies, BC, NYU, top UCs

I think OP asked how Sidwell and GDS kids do there and I tried to answer with numbers. No booster here and zero ties to Michigan. Just a parent of a kid applying.
