My DS turned 5 in September and my parents got him a bicycle for his birthday. They ordered it online and it was delivered to our house we put the large box, which had a picture of the bike on it, in the garage to store it until his birthday. In that two week period the bike was stolen from our garage, which we found completely crazy since we live in a fairly affluent, quiet neighborhood without much crime.
Today, almost 6 months later, we saw our neighbor’s kid riding the same exact bike that we had stolen. It is a popular brand but it come in several color combinations so it’s pretty strange that they have the exact same color that we ordered. DH wants to say something but I am not sure what good that would do. They will never admit it and we have no evidence they stole it, so what is the point other than making things really awkward. Would you say something or let it go? |
| No, say nothing but lock up everything from now on and get camera's for the outside of your house. |
| I would not say anything. Not like they will confess. More than likely they just be bought the same one. |
| 6 months later? No. And how did the thieves access your garage? Fix that. |
| My affluent neighborhood has a lot of bike thefts, from thieves who RESELL. Your neighbor probably bought your bike on Craigslist for a small discount, and was told a story about downsizing or kids outgrowing their bike. I’ve sold all of my kids’ outgrown bikes on Craigslist, but I’m sure there are stolen ones too. |
| Oh I would say something letting them know you know. |
Know what? She knows nothing. |
| No, don’t say anything. You don’t have solid proof and it’s 6 months later. You’ll just look crazy even if you’re right. Beef up your security if you haven’t done so already. |
“Make sure you keep that bike locked up. Larlo got the same one his birthday a few months ago and it was stolen from our garage. We were shocked and got cameras the next week. Can’t believe that happened in our neighborhood, but I guess you never know.” |

You could casually mention that they have great taste in bikes, but that they need to be careful because you had the same bike stolen from your garage 6 months ago. Assess their reaction, but that is the best you are going to get.
Also, I'm assuming you figured out how to secure your garage at this point? |
How many combinations? It's probably not as unlikely as you would think. My assumption would be they did not steal it, and your DH will appear crazy and foolish if he accuses them. If he can't let it go, the most he can say is "Oh, wow, be careful with your kid's bike. 6 months ago that exact same one was stolen from our garage. Crazy, right?" |
This. Are you in the habit of leaving the doors open at night? Or the theif stole a large box in broad daylight? Maybe start shutting your garage doors when you aren't in the front yard. |
| There was a similar thread months ago. I think that thread turned out troll. |

Oh that’s cute. |
