How long does student have to make up work after illness?

I'm sure this must be available on the web but I'm not finding it and am kind of stressed, so I figured someone here would know the answer faster that I can find it!

My high schooler is completely stressed out. He has been diagnosed with mono and has been out of school for a week. He went back today (but wasn't 100% but didn't want to miss more school) and his math teacher told him he needs to take tests tomorrow and thursday on material they did while he was out. I think that surely there s a policy giving more time but I can't find it! (I don't actually know all of the details; it seems likely that at least one of these was a test from the first day of his absence (simply because I don't know how they could fit so many tests into a week).

I think the issue is that it's the end of the term so teacher wants everything in this week. But the kid doesn't know the material.

A secondary issue is that he was out for Covid in December and I don't think he actually turned in an assignment from back then (the school has a designated day where all makeup work should be submitted prior to interims and he was out with Covid that week and figured he missed his chance. That's just a homework in the 10% category, but he's now convinced he will fail math and so every point counts!

Usually they have till the end of the marking period. Maybe they're saying this week because the marking period ends this week? Which sucks for your son, but I understand from a grading perspective that they can't leave that gradebook open indefinitely....definitely engage administration on this issue.

There is an option to take an incomplete and finish the work next quarter. My DC had to do this once when sick right at the end of a marking period.

Yeah, I was going to say that, as I believe that was what I had heard, but didn't want to be wrong so didn't say anything.

It does require a bit more paperwork as you have to submit grade changes with the teacher, counselor and registrar, but that might be the best option given the timing and circumstances.

Is he going to somehow learn this material in the next week?

No idea, but taking the tests early next week certainly seems more feasible than by Tomorrow!

I agree that the issue must be the end of the term but I’m certain there is a policy somewhere that accommodates for kids sick the last two weeks of the term! Another issue is that with mono the fatigue and brain fog last a long time…. Before the absence (which is why we went to doc) and certainly a bit longer from here (though he was kind of ok for school today).

If he’s going to plead his case for extra time, he’d better have an answer to that question.

I'm pretty sure the policy is just to take the incomplete like the PPs said, if your kid isn't ready. So you should double check the procedures for getting an incomplete, and then ask the teacher for this option.

I have heard that students have as many days to make up work as they have been absent. So, 10 days absent = 10 days to do make up work. Be sure to get a doctor's note!

HS Teacher here.
- Students have as many days as they were lawfully absent to make-up work.
- Your student missed the opportunity for December's make-up work.
- It is reasonable to expect your student to take a test which was on the 1st day of their absence. Given that it has been a week, I think taking the missed test on Thursday (using Wednesday to study) is reasonable.
- It is not reasonable to ask the student to learn material they were absent for and take a test on it with one day turnaround. I would push back on that.

I would loop your grade level administrator into this conversation because they can make broader decisions across multiple classes and how to handle end of semester grading. I think you have two choices.
1. Take an incomplete in math. Use the weekend to learn material. Check in with teacher at start of next week for questions. Take the test by end of week.
2. Ask to be excused from last test (grades would include the 1st test that was missed and is taken before end of quarter) and just close out semester grades. Still review the missed material over the weekend. Start fresh in Sem B.

This is so helpful and reasonable. Thank you so much!
