HSPT Scores

Has anyone received their HSPT results from ADW?

Not yet here. The website says that results will be emailed to parents by January 26th, so sometime in the next week: https://adwcatholicschools.org/high-school/placement-tests/high-school-choices/

Can someone post when ADW folks get their scores?

Arlington scores are in (test was 12/1) but DJO has said they have not received them for some of our kids.

Wondering if HPST is sending them together? Just a theory.

Not yet for us either. I assume they all go out at the same time. I've been tracking the January 26th date the website has but was hoping it might come a bit earlier. Either way, we'll know soon.

We haven't received the scores either. This long wait is agonizing! What score will be a safe score to get, with no legacy admit, in order to have a good chance of admittance?

Depends on the school and how many legacy kids and strong athletes are applying.

My oldest has straight As and a 98 HSPT. No legacies at a high school very big on legacies. Not recruited for sport.

Younger sibling had a 93 HSPT.

I found out that was higher than a lot of kids, but it also determines who gets put in Honors English. Math and Foreign language (Honors/Level) are determined by the tests the school administers in May the year before entry.

So, to where was your older child admitted? And did the child with the 93 get admitted to the same school? If so, their sibling is a factor (but it sounds like they are both high achievers...and would excel in a competitive school).

Depends on numerous other things but if you're generally a good student it will be used as much for merit aid and class placement as anything. If your grades are marginal and you nail the test, it might help admission. If you have good grades and bomb it badly, it could hurt I suppose.

What score is considered bombing it?

I truthfully think the younger one would have been admitted on his own (even w/out an older sibling) with 93 HPST and straight As in honors middle school. OF course, it certainly didn't hurt.

There are some sibling cases where the younger one has lower scores and grades. Legacy is a big deal.

I also think the 93 vs 98 was that my older kid took them before Covid. My younger one took them after the year of learning loss with virtual school most of the last year and half of middle school. He's a straight A Honors student Freshmen now who has adjusted very easily and gets the grades without stress while I keep hearing from other Freshmen parents how hard the school is and how much struggle their own kids are having. I also see that it has been easier for him than his older brother who had the higher HSPT score. Older brother is also a straight A student in Honors/APs and scored a perfect ACT with very little prep this Sept. of Jr year.

A lot of schools want a holistic approach with a varied student body. I think legacy affords that because in most families, the kids aren't carbon copies and can vary greatly in ability/scores.

If your school has a lot of legacy admits and your kid is not a recruited athlete and not a legacy, then they need to do the best they can. That's what I told my older one who had his heart set on this school and he really studied hard for the HSPT the summer before he took it.

My issue is why the ADW will not allow parents to see the scores until this late. Our parish school has had the scores for at least a week or so and is tight lipped and not allowed to share them. A staff member admitted they already have the scores, which is why I know. Keeping parents in the dark about the scores until after scholarship applications and general applications are due is just wrong. If I knew my kid got a low score and had no chance at one of these scholarships, I would not encourage him/her to fill out these scholarship applications and it might influence which schools he/she would apply to. Full transparency is needed by the ADW. Let parents find out the scores when you send them to the parish elementary schools and the high schools. Not doing so is wrong and not fair to families who have sacrificed a lot to send their kids to these schools.

It's a very weird system to give the test and then require applications to go in totally blind - you have NO idea where your kid stands in terms of the scores. I don't understand it. The SAT and ACT scores come back in like 13 days. How could HSPT take so many weeks to score?

I can't speak to admissions but I do know that very high HSPT scores led to merit scholarships for my DD a few years ago at two DC Catholic girls' schools.

I agree with the first paragraph - but I suppose admission isn't as dependent on HSPT score as college admission is dependent on SAT/ACT. Our K-8 gave us no guidance so far as our child's chances at the school of choice. Only supported basics such as recommendations (although this went straight to teachers for some schools) and submitting transcripts. Underwhelming but not surprising based on our experience over the past 9 years.

So far as timing of results, we are Diocese of Arlington and had them via US Mail from our school maybe 2 weeks after the test.
