| You always hear about how she's show-biz royalty, but wasn't her dad just a producer of some mid-level TV shows in the early 80s? |

Blythe Danner mother Harvey weinstein victim/ protege |
I think St Elsewhere was more than mid-level, and The White Shadow was pretty groundbreaking, but even if you discount her father, her mother is a well-known award-winning actress (Tony/Emmy no Oscar (yet)) |
It is hard to overstate how massive St. Elsewhere was. Mark Harmon, Denzel Washington, Howie Mendel, Ed Begley Jr., and David Morse all got their start on St. E. It was the grand-daddy of ER and Grey's. For some bizarre reason, it was never really syundicated so people don't remember it as much now, but it was definitely appointment TV in the 80's for teenagers up through old geezers. White Shadow was also awesome. I think she called Paul Newman Uncle Paul, so that definitely counts as Hollywood royalty. When the Weinstein story broke, I was really surprised by how her family connections did NOT play into the story. First, most predators will avoid someone with that kind of connections --- they are looking for someone that doesn't have the connections to fight back. Second, why did she run to Brad Pitt for help, instead of Uncle Paul? I feel like one of her dad's friends would have been well situated to *really* threaten HW. Brad threatened to beat him up. Paul could have threatened to ruin him. I was also surprised that Mira Sorvino was not better able to leverage her dad's connections when threatened by HW. I don't think her dad was as well connnected, though. |
| She also got her Oscar and got topless in Shakespeare in Love. I really enjoyed the movie and concept, but Harvey Weinstein seems to have gotten some really big stars to go topless or do sex scenes. The women then won Oscars. That used to infuriate me even before the Weinstein perversion and crimes became public knowledge. |
What’s interesting about some of these Hollywood sex offenders is that they DID target and attack women with powerful connections. Watch the HBO doc about Drew Dixon, daughter of DC mayor and NCS/Stanford pedigree, and the hip hop mogul who raped her. I too would have thought more connected women were safer from such assaults. But maybe going after powerful women is part of the kick of it for these men. |
Before Me Too broke, tori spelling wrote in her autobiography that she refused to go topless in a Harvey Weinstein production. She expected her dad to support her, but he said. Well, if I know Harvey, thwt probanly means he will cut you out. And he did. |
| Just blowing off Blythe Danner… |
Interesting because I read an interview with Nicole Kidman after Me Too had broken, and she said that she believed that she was "off limits" to the predatory behavior in Hollywood because she was married to Tom Cruise. I guess he was a powerful enough name to keep her protected. |

+1, that's a whole different category of protection. Also agree with the importance of St. Elsewhere. It is weird that it didn't go into syndication like other shows, but maybe it was more the sitcoms that were syndicated back then, before streaming. For dramas, you need to be able to binge. Syndication is for one-off channel surfing. It's hard to think of other one-hour dramas that were syndicated, except for Law and Order. No Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, etc. In any case, St. Elsewhere had storylines with a gut punch that I still remember. Excellent show. I think Hulu has it now, actually. |

Blythe Danner appeared in at least one episode of St. E. She was hilarious as a beautiful WASPY woman who wanted a nose job to give her a bump that would make her more "interesting looking."
She is a great actress--absolutely hilarious in Butterflies Are Free on Broadway. Goldie Hawn played the same role in the movie. |
| Drew Barrymore her Grandfather John Barrymore was a huge Broadway star. She is double nepotism |
