Serving beef stew--what to serve on the side?

Anonymous
I'm making a beef stew with carrots and potatoes and plan to have egg noodles. Do I need a side? Simple salad? One of the guests must be dairy free.

Something green. Ina Garten's roasted broccoli, or a really nice but simple spinach salad.

I feel like beef stew, especially as you’re making it, tends to contain enough veggies that I don’t need an additional side. I normally just have a bowl with a hunk of baguette and butter!

But if you feel compelled to add to it, a side salad would be perfect!

Agree. Simple salad, if anything at all.

Simple salad with vinaigrette (greens, maybe cucumber and red pepper) and bread + butter/olive oil.

Peas go IN the stew, not on the side.

I agree with the bread and butter (or margarine for the dairy free guest) poster. Stew is a meal unto itself.

+1 I would serve some type of bread and a salad.

Why are you serving beef stew to guests?

Yuck

I agree with those who said simple salad. Beef stew is a rich, hearty dish - you want a contrast, something bright and acidic.

Hahah! It is quite the heavy dinner.

I'd do some french bread and side salad.

Please go sit in time out for 10 minutes, and think about where your life went wrong.
