So how does I66 work now without tolls?

Anonymous
Since we have separate hot lanes, does that mean I can drive on regular 66 lanes without HOV around 8am in the morning? I was planning to drive to work today but took metro instead as I am not sure how I 66 works now.

What do you mean now that there’s not a toll? HOV is still in effect going eastbound in the mornings and you pay a toll unless you have 3 passengers.

So I use hot lane when driving with less than 3 ppl or use regular lanes with 3 ppl to avoid toll? I don't understand why there are separate hot lanes

Are they express lanes?

For the parts of the day when it is not rush hour.

The express lane allows you to go faster at any time of the day. But you pay. HOV is still in effect on the highway in the morning and afternoon, eastbound and westbound, respectively.

the new Hot lanes on 66 are outside the beltway. 66 tolls for inside the beltway haven’t changed.

So the new express lanes are toll only, not HOT lanes?

Outside the Beltway the express lanes require either a toll or HOV3 and the special EZ Pass. Regular lanes are free.

Inside the Beltway is toll or HOV3 during weekday rush, free at all other times.

OP if you were driving from VA into DC by yourself, nothing inside the Beltway has changed and you still have to pay. The only difference is outside the Beltway.

I despise tolls. The signage is particularly confusing for the I66 tolls.

Is this correcf
Express - faster, pay toll, can use even for less than 3 people
Regular lanes - 3+, no toll
Regular lanes - less than 3, pay tolls

agreed ...I accidentally went three times W off of 495 when my intention was E
it definitely looks like the GOV did the signs...

The same thing happened to us. They swapped the exits! Eastbound used to come before westbound, but now it’s the other way around.

Not quite.

Outside the Beltway:
-Express lanes always have a toll, unless HOV 3+ with EZpass Flex.
-Regular lanes have no toll, regardless of time or number of riders.

Inside the Beltway:
-During morning rush hour eastbound traffic is HOV3+ with EZpass Flex, or you pay a variable toll. The same applies for westbound traffic during evening commute.
-All other hours there is no toll, regardless of riders.
