I am currently in the middle range of normal BMI.
Before becoming pregnant, I was stressed out and eating a ton of junk food, which made me gain weight. Now I know I'm pregnant, I'm trying to eat healthy, nutritious food, and greasy or sugary foods make me queasy anyway and I can't handle them. I know that if I continue with my new healthy eating habits, I will lose weight. How much weight is it OK to lose? |

I wouldn’t be so sure. The baby causes weight gain lol - even that early, you make more blood, your breasts grow, you bloat.
Just eat well and to hunger and ignore the scale until the OB says differently. |
| I lost a little bit of weight in my first trimester. My appetite was messed up and I often felt queasy. I don't think it's abnormal. |
OP here. I hadn't thought of that! Thanks, everyone. |
| I lost a lot of weight (>10lbs) in my first tri and didn't gain my first pound (from pre-pregnancy) until week 22 or so. I was just sick all the time and everything to eat sounded terrible. I thought I was some kind of unicorn but based on feedback from friends this is very common. |
| I've had four prior pregnancies and lost weight first tri with all because of morning sickness and no apetite and cutting out wine. Pregnant with number 5 and 12 weeks and down about 6 pounds. It's fine. You will slowly gain it back after first tri and don't need to gain as much as they tell you, even if you're BMI is normal. |
| Also - it's much better to loose a few pounds and eat healthy than to keep eating crap. |
| Please don't feel bad, OP. I am pregnant with my third and naturally very thin. I have already gained ten pounds by 14 weeks and even though I'm taken aback by how much I have gained (!) I keep reminding myself that this has happened to me in every pregnancy. Overall, I gained 30 pounds with my first and 27 with my second. The weight gain really evened out for me during the second and third trimesters. It's scary gaining more than double the recommended amount in the first trimester (which is what always happens to me), but I swear that in my experience just trying to eat healthy for the remainder of the pregnancy resulted in my gaining a healthy amount of weight. I do not know how some people don't gain weight until they are 20 weeks, but I don't think it's particularly healthy to compare yourself to those people since they are on a different path than you when it comes to pregnancy weight gain -- and they may end up gaining 25 or 30 pounds in the last 20 weeks, which definitely doesn't sound that healthy. I'm saying this as someone in the same place as you, I really wouldn't focus on trying to lose weight right now because unless you really diet (which is not good for the baby or probably for you psychologically) you will probably not lose weight and that will only make you feel worse about yourself -- and you may even eat more if you feel bad about yourself. Just focus on eating as healthy as possible and try to drink water and get as much exercise as you can. |
| I lost 15 lbs first trimester from nausea. It's fine. |

My sister got really sick with food poisoning in the first trimester with my niece (who is now a teenager). The doctor said “the baby will take what it needs, it’s you I’m worried about.” (She was throwing up constantly.) As long as you’re hydrated / eating healthy foods I think you’re fine.
With my first, I craved watermelon and blueberries and felt so happy taking care of us that I swam or did yoga almost daily. At 16 weeks I hadn’t gained weight and my doctor told me I needed to increase my calorie count. With my second I was busier and going to kid birthday parties and stuff and started gaining almost immediately. Ultimately, I put on about the same amount of weight (25-30 lbs) with each. |
