Is this a red flag?

Looking at daycare for a 10 month old. Unless she has a doctor's appointment, we can't drop off after 9. Is that a common policy?

I think it’s pretty normal for daycares to have a drop off window. Ours is 8-9. You can just roll in with your kid whenever you feel like it and expect them to stop everything for you. It’s not a kennel.

In some daycares. Everyone is different. Different schedules

I think its strange as you are paying for the service.

A red flag no. But the policy may not work for you. Many centers do not have these types of policies.

Totally normal. At our daycare they take the daily headcount at 9, which they need for licensure reporting/records and to make sure they’re meeting staffing ratios. They also lock the front door at 9 so they don’t have to have a person standing there monitoring the entrance for security purposes. Finally, they start the routine of the day at 9. All the kids are seated for breakfast, for example, then they have circle time/story and activities. It can be very disruptive if kids are dropped off whenever.

That said, we just call and let them know if we’re running late and it isn’t a problem, but it very rarely happens.

Not normal. With several kids we have been in 5 different centers over the years and never had a policy like that. You could drop in and pick up anytime and also had the right to enter yourself at anytime.

Um, yes.

That is what happens at a daycare.

Normal at mine, though our cut off time has been later since the pandemic.

This is completely ridiculous. If you pay for the service, you should be allowed care no matter which time you arrive. Lock the door? Are you kidding me? That is also against fire code.

What? You think a daycare center should just leave unmonitored doors unlocked?

Do you have actual experience with day care centers?

Many daycares will have a set routine. If people waltz in at all hours it disrupts the day for everyone.

Red flag? No. Would it work for me? Also no.

My (small) center does ask that we give them a head's up in the app if we will be dropping off late or picking up especially early (and that we do neither during naptime if possible) but it's not especially strict, particularly not for the infants/toddlers.
