I’ve never had to buy kid bedding before and I feel like I’m getting suckered by marketing ploys or just really out of touch for what is needed .
Our 2 year old needs to transition to a twin bed and give up his crib to his brother (he is over the three feet recommended anyway). So I got a cheap bed frame off fb marketplace. Then found mattresses online for either super cheap on Amazon ($65) or pricey elsewhere (ranging from $500-$800 for a twin?!). I reasoned he can use it many years and purchased one for $550. This felt like a lot of money to me. Now I’m stuck at bedding - again there are cheap polyester sheets on Amazon for $40 or pottery barn types for $79-350. Options range from sheet sets to quilts to comforters and duvets to shams to pillows. Now I’m overwhelmed. What is necessary for a two year old and where do I find middle ground, reasonably priced bedding? Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong places I just googled it. Thank you. |
Target Pillowfort is fine for a 2 year old.You are overthinking this. |
You are way overthinking this.
Go to TJ Maxx or target and get yourself whatever cheap bedding you can find. Invest in a good waterproof cover for your mattress so when accidents happen, you just wash that. |
Sheets are expensive. (I mean, everything is now, but sheets ain’t cheap.)
I’d buy the same sheets you buy for yourself, but in twin size. Money on sleep products is money well spent—a good night’s sleep is the foundation for a good day. I like Egyptian cotton sheets made in Portugal. They are the very best. But, target threshold cotton sheets are fine if you don’t want to spend a lot. Don’t do polyester, he will get overheated. |
I try to think about what is necessary for the long run, so I don' think you overspent on a mattress. You don't have to buy the stuff from Pottery Barn if you don't want to. As for middle-ground, Pottery Barn is it. Most cheap bedding is polyester. Crate & Barrel is another option for cute kids bedding. I try to wait for that kind of stuff to go on sale. Check out Bed Bath & Beyond too. We bought a few nice sets of sheets from there. |
I would just suggest not going all out on any themed bedding. Just buy a solid color nice sheet set (you can get good cotton ones at Target!) but when your kid decides he likes whatever character of the month you can buy him a fleece throw blanket or pillow.
My kid LOVED space when he was 2 - so I went all out with the space-themed bedroom, sheets, pillows, decor... Now he's 5 and asks every day for a different type of "room" - his favorite NFL team, dinosaurs, Paw Patrol, etc. The themed sheets are usually cheap quality, anyway. |
I love Target's sheet sets, especially for kids. Pillowfort is so cute! We've had 2 sets in heavy rotation for my 6 year old for the last 4 years and have no had any issues. They still look great.
My only complaint is that my 8 year old is in a XL twin and they don't offer sheets in that size. |
Do not buy expensive bedding. No matter how quickly you wash it after your kid pees through their pull up or underwear, it will get grungy much more quickly than yours. We bought cheap cotton ones on Amazon. The Target pillowfort quilts/ covers are amazing. They hold up in the wash very well with no pilling/ color fading.
Remember to put a waterproof mattress cover on too, otherwise there goes your expensive mattress. Honestly though, I’d return it and spend a lot less one one. If you have to replace it due to accidents, you’re not out a ton of money. |
Please get everything at IKEA. You are guaranteed that the products meet the European Union's stringent chemical safety requirements. The US has very lax standards when it comes to formaldehyde off-gassing in mattresses, for example, or any sort of chemical treatment of fabrics and foams. So if you're not buying certified organic, Oeko-Tex, or similar from an American seller, and price is a concern, do yourself a favor and get everything at IKEA. They make everything in huge quantities for worldwide distribution and keep costs down, but still have to adhere to the EU's safety standards. |
