My kid hates meat, is open to beans, loves veggies, but doesn't like spice.
A lot of bean/lentil recipes tend to have some heat. Any suggestions for ones that would be mild? Last night we had black bean tacos with apple cabbage slaw, just some olive oil and lime juice, honey, cumin, and crumbled cheese and it was a hit. Looking for more ideas. |
| Sweet okay? I like Boston baked beans. Those Golden Curry cubes from the Asian section of the grocery store aren't terribly spicy and are good with chickpeas (or tofu if that's acceptable). Black beans are good in quesadillas (budget bytes has a good recipe). |

My kid loves arroz con gandules. I omit the pork and use olive oil. To save time I make big batches of sofrito and freeze it in chunks. For this dish, I give myself extra olives and omit them for my kid. https://kitchendelujo.com/arroz-con-gandules-puerto-rican-rice-pigeon-peas/ |
Thanks - I'm not familar with this spice packet - not spicy? And can I find it in a regular grocery store? 1 packet sazon culantro y achiote |
Thanks, sweet is fine. DS is sensitive if I even use black pepper so really has to be mild. Tofu is fine. I do plan to try some sweet potato black bean quesadillas next. Thanks for the recipe tip! |

Progresso Lentil with Roasted Vegetable Soup (I like it served over brown rice) Senate Navy bean soup (does include ham) https://www.senate.gov/about/traditions-symbols/senate-bean-soup.htm Feijoada (Brazilian black bean and meat stew) - has a lot of meat, but maybe with the beans it would be okay? Maybe you could try a little bit of spice with something to soften the spice. I like Hormel’s vegetarian chili, and if you serve it over Kraft Mac and cheese, it really cuts the spice, especially as you can adjust the ratio so that it’s mostly mac and cheese topped with just a little chili. You can always adjust the ratio later. |

Try Japanese curry. Get S&B or Vermont Curry Japanese mild curry roux. I find Vermont curry to be milder and sweeter. And you can adjust how strong the flavor is by how many sections you put in. (It will just be thinner if you use less squares)
It’s usually made with beef or chicken, but there are recipes out there that are just vegetables. Here’s a recipe that adds beans. https://www.sbfoods-worldwide.com/recipes/122.html |

| Black bean nachos or black bean quesadillas. We also like the Annie’s brand lentil soup over rice ( drain slightly) if he likes lentils. |
| Why not follow the recipe you like and reduce the heat. If recipe calls for chorizo / andouille sausages, just use regular smokies and skip cayenne pepper and similar additions. I like the New Orleans rice and bean recipes and just substitute the “hot” stuff. |

It's not spicy-it's a big school potluck favorite- and you should be able to find it at any store with a goya or badia section. I usually cook the annatto seeds in oil and then just add the spices rather than using the packet. Their are many variations, but this link has a nice recipe. https://latinamommeals.com/homemade-sazon-seasoning-mix/ |

Black bean and cheese quesadilla... I mash up the black beans first.
Or do the same on nachos. |
