DC is in middle school, and A is for 89.5 and up in MCPS but I heard A is for 93 and up in some other counties or states.
Is it going to be the same in high school? I am confused - is GPA 4.0 in MCPS or some other county presenting the same level of grade? |
Don't worry - whatever an A is, at MCPS your DC will have the chance to take tests over and over again until they get the score they want/need. |
really depend on the class and teacher |
A is 90-100, and yes 89.5 rounds up to 90. Unweighted GPA uses a 4-point scale, but Weighted GPA uses 5-point scale. |
Some school systems have grading scales with pluses and minuses. So 92.5 - 97.6 is A, 89.5 - 92.5 is A- etc . . . It gives a little advantage to kids who otherwise would have a - and a little disadvantage when you might otherwise have a +. The GPA comes out about the same. |

Grade 6 to Grade 12 Academic Grades
A 90-100 Outstanding level of performance B 80-89 High level of performance C 70-79 Acceptable level of performance D 60-69 Minimal level of performance E Unacceptable level of performance E3 Students who have five or more unlawful absences in the class |
This is false information. |
But it's so fun to say these things and fear monger!
|
| OP, it does not really matter what other school systems are doing since the tests and curriculums are different. Colleges know this. Colleges know that MCPS counts almost all classes taken by college bound kids as a 5 too. They get an info sheet from the HS that shows the breakdown of GPAs for the seniors. |
| I was in a school system that used eight point scales so 93-100 A, 85-92 B, 77-85 C, 70-77 D, but it looks like as of 2023 they've switched to ten points. I had always assumed colleges knew what scale schools used when people apply. |
They do. Most transcripts have a key on the bottom that states the scale. Moreover, the admissions office has copies of the course catalogs, which include grading info. |
Here's an example of the school profile document which high schools send to colleges along with the student's transcript: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YNidgXTspcVlEwyMVqmZhayYa0fWCSDg/view?usp=sharing |
| It's all relative. If they decrease the range of an A they will also simply make the test scale so it's exactly the same. None of this matters. |

Guys:
Halloween is always on Oct. 31 School ends mid-June They err on the side of caution with weather delays and closings and if it actually really snows a lot, you won’t get plowed right away Grades are on the very normal 10 point scale I don’t know or care about what kind of unusual things they do in random other states or towns. A 92 is not a B and we are not trick or treating on a random Sunday. Keep it simple! |
Simple things can be complicated when resources are limited. |
