Is it strange that my four year old still naps?

Anonymous
He turned four in September and still takes pretty long naps and then goes to bed around 8 and up at 6.30. Most of my friends with kids that age stopped napping so was curious.

My kids both napped until a few weeks before Kindergarten, a month after they turned 5. If they hadn't been going to K, I think they would have happily continued. I think my 12 year old would still nap if the schedule allowed.

My 4 year old loves a good 2 hour nap. He can skip it and will be ok, but napping puts him in a much better mood.

How many days is he in preschool?

It’s unusual not not totally out there. A lot of kids in daycare are forced to nap regardless of age so some nap til past 5 depending on their birthday. They end up being awake until gone 10pm and it’s a cycle…..

One of mine did this, too. He’s 14 and still goes to bed pretty early and falls asleep during the day on weekends or in the car. He’s a great sleeper. Always wakes up super early and in a great mood. The rest of us are jealous.

Five days. If he doesn’t nap he’s fine but he just fell asleep watching tv, it’s like he can’t resist

It's not strange, just on the older end of normal. My kid dropped her nap at three, which I think is about average. His best friend at school still occasionally naps at five. It just depends on the kid.

By the way, this is true about nighttime sleep. I used to worry my kid wasn't getting enough nighttime sleep even though he had no mood or behavior issues. It's just that he sleeps less than 10 hours a night and has since he was in preschool. But it turns out that's just how much sleep he needs. He goes to sleep around 9pm and wakes up around 6am and plays quietly in his room. He never falls asleep while traveling unless it's like the middle of the night, and he doesn't have pre-dinner or dinnertime tantrums.

Sleep is a spectrum as much as most things are.

Sleep is good. Mine took 1-1.5 hour naps until age 4.5

I think this is normal. PK-4 still has nap time and he’s only halfway though the year. If he still needs a nap this summer, that would be on the layer end of normal but he just turned 4.

My 20 y.o. still naps. She is a high performer but she naps any chance she gets. Don't worry about this.

I’m a very high energy person, but on weekends I love taking a nap with my toddler.
