What to do with 2k gift?

Anonymous
My parents generously gave us a couple grand for holidays.
We have no debt and just need to save for retirement and college for our kids who are 10 and 5.
Dumb but can we save half and spend half?

Save it all op!

Personally I’d save it. I guess I’d suggest you think about your savings goals and whether you’d rather make progress there vs how much you’d want whatever it is you’d spend the gift money on. The choice is yours.

2k? Buy something nice for yourself. Spring on a personal trainer. Fancy NYE party. Pick one of the above. Done.

Spend some and save most. Fun family dinner you wouldn’t usually afford and some small-ish thing you’ve been wanting (say $150 or less). New sweater, frame some art to hang it, get a big plant and planter that livens up your space, go get a facial at a new place you’ve been wanting to try. Give $100 to charity and the rest goes to saving.

Don’t save it all - enjoy it a bit. Life is short.

I’d $100 spend $100 on each family member and save the other $1600.

Spend half if it makes you happy,OP. And extra $1k is not going to make or break retirement or college savings. Let your parents see you enjoy it.

I’d put it towards a trip like Disney

I would put $500 in each girls college account and then save the other $1k for vacay.

Buy an I bond and think about it until you're sure. Rates are high!

Spend $100 on the kids, $200 per parent and put $500 each in the kids college funds and $1K in your brokerage
