Tell me about Towson

Anyone have experiences to share about Towson (either positive or negative)? How does the business school compare to UMBC and Salisbury? We are Maryland residents but I don’t know much about Towson. Would love to hear from others about their DC’s experience there.

Daughter a junior there and it's been fine. Think umbc have students have stronger academic profile. the city of Towson is nice and there are walkable places. Salisbury students probably have similar academic profile to Towson. But Towson is larger and more urban. Also, lots of cool new apartments right off campus to live in, also walkable to campus.

My son is a freshman business student at Towson. Like pp said, UMBC is more difficult to get into, but it's also more of a STEM school, while Towson is more of a liberal arts school. UMBC also has a foreign language requirement for graduation (unless student achieved level IV in high school). DS has no interest in taking a foreign language again so he never even pursued schools with that requirement.

DS seems to be taking mostly core classes his first year. The business program boasts a very high employment rate after graduation, probably boosted by the internship requirements. DS chose to share an off-campus apartment with a friend instead of living in a dorm. The cost is similar to the price of a dorm. Freshmen who live on-campus are not allowed to have cars, so this is one way he can still have a car. He seems to be enjoying his independence.

Salisbury has an excellent business school with its proximity to Perdue but imho your student has to want to be in Salisbury. My dd did not really like the area. Towson on the other hand has the resources of being in a suburban area right outside DC and Baltimore with all that offers. UMBC os more stem but might be worth a look. Go and visit all 3 when school is in session and do an open house. I also think Salisbury is easier to get in than the other two.

That’s great to know (about the foreign language requirement). Thank you!

Towson in particular has a great Education program.

That is definitely their specialty and a lot of current teachers get their EdM at TU to bolster their credentials. I was surprised to see the broad range of degrees Towson offers including STEM fields such as nursing and computer science. I digress, though, since OP was asking specifically about business. Towson is known for their solid business program and they even offer a five year plan that ends with an MBA. Another school well known for their business program is University of Baltimore. I don't know much about the program but I have two family members who went to UB for accounting and are doing extremely well.

Towson has a better business school. UMBC is the school for more.nerdy types and doesn't have a business school, but a business like major I believe. Towson provides more of a college experience in terms of football games and campus life(off campus too). There's not too much around Salisbury. Also, when I was a student(at a different Baltimore area college), I interned during the school year at a company in the city.

Towson is good for business, and I know that the big 4 accounting programs recruit from there. Salisbury probably is better for business with all of the Purdue money, but Towson is a better area to live. UMBC does have a good reputation for job placement, so I am sure it would be fine, but I always feel like it is commuter school.

UMBC was a big commuter school back in the '80s and '90s when I was a student there. But it's much more selective in who they accept these days and I think students are more likely to live on or near campus than they used to. It's computer science department is a huge draw and people come from out of state to go there.

Any more up to date feedback on Towson? Particularly the business school and overall campus experience?

Son is a current freshman accounting major (in the business school). UMBC was not an option because it does not a have a business school. If that is the direction your child is going, I woould not go there. Between Towson and Salisbury, my son liked Towson a lot more. Your child should visit both and see if they like the vibe better at either school.

Students do start semester 1 with core business classes (my son was required to do accounting and macro as a 1st semester student), so there is not a lot of freshman intro classes like at other schools. This can be a pro or con.

He is liking school. It is a smaller, but not tiny campus. It is more lively than UMBC, but a lot less lively than UMD. I'm not sure how Salisbury fits in. He has met a lot of friends and is glad he went there, but still comes home about one weekend a month (that is his personality).

Hope that helps.

Thanks! Is he happy with class size and accessibility to professors or TAs for questions?
