Food Deserts

How easy it is to buy inexpensive grocery and food around Capitol Hill if you don't have a car? Is it somewhat like a food desert? Do you have to order online?

Much easier/cheaper with a car but online ordering is pretty easy and ubiquitous.

There are a few good boutiques for (sometimes overpriced) specialty items, but for regular groceries, a combination of the Eastern Market farmer's market, Eastern Market, grocery delivery, and a bike ride to the Safeway, it can be done car-free, but won't always hit your inexpensive requirement.

Is there an affordable organic food store there?

There are great ways to haul a week's worth of groceries by bike if that works for you.

there is a huge safeway just north of pennsylvania on 14th. there is harris teeter in navy yard. capitol hill is pretty expansive where the grocery store can be very walkable depending on your precise location w/in the neighborhood.

affordable organic seems like a little bit of an oxymoron. there is whole foods on h street ne. there is a small organic grocery store on barracks row.

Eastern Market has basic vendors for meat, poultry, seafood, pasta and produce, plus TJs and Yes organic market. Potomac Avenue Metro is close to Safeway. H Street has WF and Giant. Navy Yard has WF and Harris Teeter. Not much different than any other part of the city in terms of grocery shopping options and costs.

Capitol Hill USED to be a food desert, but is the opposite now. I can walk to all of the stores (except for the Navy Yard ones) listed in the PP in 30 minutes or less.

Is this legit? Homes within walking distance to grocery stores are are more expensive? There is a premium for proximity to metro stops but who knew, tgere is one for groceries as well. It makes sense though, both make life easier.

CH has some pretty solid corner stores. Capitol Supreme. Cupboard. Corner Market. Union Kitchen. Alas Roland’s on Pennsylvania is gone but the Capitol Hill Supermarket at Mass & Third is another option. It’s possible to CaBi to MOMs Organic Market on NY Avenue in Ivy City (via WV Avenue) and to Union Market.

So it doesn’t have the amenities if a “15 minute city” like it should. Probably because it’s too low density which is why housing is so expensive. Need to remove the historical designation so they can build more housing.

Using language like “food dessert” to refer to Capitol Hill is pretty offensive to people EOTR who live in an high poverty area that’s an actual food dessert.

Agreed (and fixed "dessert"). In addition, I don't think anyone has mentioned the Trader Joe's by Eastern Market.
