My son turned 4 in the fall. He is in pre k this year because his nursery has a late cut off. He is a wreck by the time he gets home from school around 2:30. He doesn’t really nap anymore, but are anyone’s else’s kids around this age a disaster when they get home? Are the days just too long for them? |
He may need to nap. My 3yo and 5yo are in full day PK (8:30-3:15), and even though they don’t nap at home and haven’t for a couple years, they nap every day at school. The full day is just too much for them without a nap, and if they don’t nap they are a wreck. They don’t nap on weekends or other no-school days. |
DD (almost 4) doesn't nap either and we had to push her bedtime forward another half hour when she started pre-k. She still only naps at school once every 6 weeks or so (we know because the teachers are so excited at pickup). |
Maybe full day is too much. Are there any half day programs? My kids did well in those. My youngest napped until 5yo |
What time does he go to bed and wake up? At 4 mine was fine in pre k but was generally in bed between 7-730. |
Home by 230 is not really a full day imo. Maybe he’s not getting enough sleep. |
He’s in bed by 7:15/7:30. Bedtime can be stalled but he’s always asleep by 8. Up between 6:15-7am depending on the day. |
Unfortunately not for prek. He did a half day 3s program last year though. |
I'm the PP who moved bedtime forward - from 7:30 to 7. Gets up at 7am. She's been much happier since we made this small adjustment (and some days we can tell she's tired and push it forward to 6:45). |
asleep by 8 and up at 615 is not enough sleep for most 4 year olds. If yours seems exhausted he is one of them. If the 615-7 wake up is because of your work schedules ( not judging) then get him in bed earlier. 12 hours is pretty standard for this age. |
It’s not! We both wfh. He’s just usually up early. He won’t sleep with the door closed so he hears us shuffling about. Can try earlier bedtime. |
Can you stay in your room longer or not shuffle around until he is awake? |
My son is a super light sleeper and I have given up early morning workouts because no matter what I wake him up occasionally and he is a disaster that afternoon. My husband and I both stay in bed until we are ok with the kids getting up. It won’t be forever. |
Not OP by the way just commiserating |
It's not clear - what time does he start preK?
Do you mean daycare (5x/week, 7-230pm) or a true traditional preK (MWF 9-12 + lunch bunch for 2 hrs, for example)? |
