Houses or shaped cookies, either are fine. Are there any edible versions that don’t cost $$$?
Or any foolproof recipes? I don’t love baking but I’ll do it if there’s no edible version. |
| Wilton's is good but takes a long time to assemble, you have to let the frosting dry to hold the sides of the house together before you can decorate. |

Trader Joe’s! They are only $8 (I think..)
They come with all the house pieces, icing, and candy. They are even made in Germany. Fancy |
| I didn’t like having to make the icing for the Tj one. Would prefer premade ready to go icing. |
Are these the triangular a frame ones? I looked up reviews and the first one said all the pieces were weirdly phallic and the icing was way too runny. |
|
The year we did the Trader Joe’s ones they did not taste good and the frosting was terrible.
We switched to Target and they are actually really tasty! They have a lot of different options (we got a treehouse kit this year but haven’t made it yet). |
| I had a miserable time with the Target houses last year. The icing never set so the houses kept collapsing. |
Does anyone eat these? We never do and I can’t imagine any of them taste good. We prefer to focus on the decorating aspect so prefer a “prefab” house kit to assembling our own. |
They're not really meant for eating - the cookies are made to be structurally sound so that they bear weight and don't collapse. Make or buy cookies separately for eating. |
I buy them every year and don’t understand those comments. No they don’t look phallic in the least. That is super odd someone thought that. And the icing comes as a powder and you add water and maybe an egg white to it. So if it is runny that is your fault. I follow what the directions say and it is spot on. It dries very hard, as needs to in order to construct the house. My kids love them and pick them apart for several days after we make them. |
This is OP. I wouldn't eat them, but I want to invite some kids over to decorate and I'm sure they'll want to. Id rather get some that actually taste edible. |
|
Maybe ask around at a local bakery if you want one that tastes good. I know of two in MOCO if you are interested.
I like Costco's version because the house is already built and all you need to do is decorate - it's also pretty cheap, maybe 12 bucks. I never eat them though. |
| We got a premade one from Whole Foods. My kid doesn’t like assembling, just decorating. |

Graham crackers. Make the houses with graham crackers and homemade frosting. Much easier if it is a bunch of kids working on houses, the fun is in the decorating with candy.
I have never heard of people eating gingerbread houses either, they are far too hard? Plus the raw eggs in the royal icing? |
| Any with houses that are pre built. We just want to get to the decorating part!! |
