| We are traveling out of the country for winter break to visit family. My kids (middle and high school) will miss a week of school, will they be able to access studentvue/my mcps classroom/ and other mcps sites in another country to catch up on homework? I’m wondering if those websites are available to be accessed outside of the U.S.? Thanks in advance! |
| I know people who were abroad during virtual learning who were able to access MCPS sites but haven't heard anything recently. |
| They would do better asking their teachers for the work they'll miss ahead of time |
DP. In my experience whenever we ask teachers what our children will miss due to a trip after winter or spring break. They always say they don’t know that far out what they will cover and just basically shrug their shoulders. For OP, being able to connect to my mcps classroom etc during their trip would be the best. Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to OP question. |
| I don’t know whether this was just a fluke, but I tried to access ParentVue while I was in the UK last month and couldn’t log in. I didn’t try Canvas or StudentVue, though. |
| I would think so. We were in Europe last year and could access it. |

Don't say it's a family trip: say it's for a religious event. For a family trip they don't have to allow your child to make up he missed work and can give your child zeros for all missed assignments. For a religious reason, they have to allow students to make up the work.
No, you don't have to explain or articulate the reason. Just a note to the counselor and all teachers that Larlo will miss classes Dec xx - Jan xx due to religious reasons. |
NP here. I had no idea. We have had four children go through mcps and I never heard that religious reasons could be used as a reason. |
You have to be comfortable with fraud. For remote access, get a vpn that puts you back in the states. Your ISP may provide one, or you can get a third party one. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-vpn-service/ |
| You should be able to access in other countries. My kid is in a school group planning a potential international trip that would occur during class days. They talked about the students having time to log in to mymcps to do schoolwork. |
| Thank you all for your replies. |
DC could access mymcpsclassroom on the school issued chromebook as well as own laptop. DC does not remember if StudentVUE was accessible. We (parents) could not access parentvue - and so no access to mymcpsclassroom as well. Using a VPN allowed us access, but it was not consistent; half the time even that would not work. Good luck! (BTW, there is a chance what works in one country does not work in another. So you might want to post a question specific to where you are traveling.) |
Same for me, also in the UK, for two trips this year. It was really frustrating as I needed to check some stuff for my kid who were back home going to school. |
You can’t. Source: someone who has tried while overseas. |
There is a lot of pressure to move the kids through. The school will generally find a way to pass the kid. They do not want them there for an extra year. Whether your kid is prepared class wise is not mcpss priority. |
