school sick policy of flu

When can kid come back to school after getting flu? I know it is fever free for 24 hours, but how about coughing/runny nose/congestion?

I have a kid that is finally fever free for 24 hours on day 8, but still has coughing/runny nose/congestion symptom. And, I also have a kid test positive for flu but does not have fever except mild coughing. So when can both kids come back to school?

Just send them with the flu. What is the big deal?

"For flu and other respiratory infections, students and staff can return to school and work if they have been fever-free for 24 hours and feel well enough to participate."

My DC had the flu last week. Doctor wrote a note that they could return when fever free for 24 hours. The coughing and congestion could go on for a while.

Thank you. One kid never has fever but test postive for flu. Does that mean he can go to school with cold symptoms?

It’s very common for congestion/cough symptoms to linger well after an infection has cleared up. Those are no reason to keep a child home.

This is kind of hilarious as 5 of us in my family just had the flu and not one with a fever. So be it.

That’s pretty unusual - I’m not sure I would have thought to test for flu without a fever!

I also tested positive with no fever. I went to the doctor thinking I had a sinus infection. Wouldn’t have thought to test for flu either.

This thread demonstrates why extended isolation/exclusion periods for illnesses are ridiculous. Lots of people get sick and never know it. Don’t perseverate on the people that are recovering and almost certainly past the significantly contagious period.

NP - I never get fevers when sick ever. One time I went to the doctor thinking I had strep and when that came back negative I asked for a flu test because I felt so awful and much worse than just a cold - doctor didn't want to do it because I didn't have fever, but I pushed for it and it came back positive. Afterwards she said she was glad I had pushed for the test as she wouldn't have done it otherwise and wouldn't have suspected.

For people who don't run fevers when sick it can be hard to get doctors to view an illness as serious.

Mostly likely because if you have the flu, there is nothing they can do. Treat the symptoms if they bother you and that is it.

There are actually treatments - I was prescribed Tamiflu
Also when I was pregnant (years ago) I was hospitalized due to flu so I have a history of flu complications - just never any fevers.

And flu testing is also an important public health measure

I have a low body temp so when my temperature is 99 I feel horrible, and it's a sign in really sick, but doctors have shooed it off. I once wandered around with strep throat for a week because the doctor refused to give me abx because I had no fever and rapid test was negative.

Then, they called me back embarrassed because the long test was positive. I'd been to see them three times. I knew what I had. They kept giving me lectures about anx overuse.
