How long to wait to take baby out if born in summer time?

Just wondering what you mamas who already have a little one think about the appropriate time to take your newborn out after birth? This will be a summer baby... any advice from pediatrician? your own opinion? Thanks mamas!

I had a late fall baby and had her outside walking within a few days, out at restaurants by 3 weeks. You can take baby out pretty immediately but just make sure they are shaded from the sun (not sure what you can do with sunscreen for a newborn?), dressed lightly and are well hydrated.

our stroller shade/canopy has UV protection for this very own reason.

We were out the day after we came home from the hospital (August baby). I can't stay inside (small condo) and I think it's good for the baby to get used to the natural rhythm of life (night/day).

I took mine out within the first week (as soon as I felt up to taking a walk).

You shouldn't put sunscreen on a newborn, and newborns aren't good at regulating their body temperature, so make sure baby is well-shaded, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Mine is due August 26 and barring any complications I plan to be out as soon as we get out of the hospital - I cannot stand being cooped up in the house.

We took ours out within a couple days (as soon as I felt up to walking) - generally early morning or in the evenings. We met friends out at a restaurant by about 3 to 4 weeks. #2 is due any day, and we'll have her out as soon as I feel up to it too (especially with a toddler who loves the park!)

Mine was a winter baby, but we definitely took him out within the first day or two. Fresh air is supposed to calm them down and knock them out. In terms of time of day, I would say either early morning or late afternoon/evening since it is so hot and humid in DC. A good sunshade and lightweight blanket would be neccessary. But if the baby is healthy enough to come home from the hospital, then he/she is healthy enough to go for a walk each day. Good for Mama too.

I guess I was mostly wondering about indoor public places...malls, restaurants, stores, etc...

I just had my baby this spring. My ped said to wait 6-8 weeks to take her out in crowded areas or where people will be in close proximity.

All the peds say this, which I think is insane and PPD inducing. One daycare-attending older sibling is far more of an issue then random people at the mall who won't be touching/coughing on your baby. Babywearing is a great way to keep people away if you're really worried.

We took our baby for a short walk, early in the morning when he was four days old. Because it is so hot here in summer, we did early mornings and evenings. Also, our stroller came with a mosquito net so that was nice. We had a nice shade on our stroller but I also would use an Aden and ANais blanket that I clipped on to the sun shade with "chip clips" and that gave our sweet boy extra shade. As far as going out to restaurants etc, we took him out at one week old. The advice our pediatrician gave us was to not go to crowded places for a while. So, we would go to lunch but we would go around 1:30 after the crowd left or for dinner at 5 or 5:30 pm. Don't be afraid to be out and about ... it is good for all involved!!!

I totally agree that this is insanity inducing! Our first pediatrician told us not to take our baby our for 2 months and not to even take him on a family vacation b/c his young cousins would be there and the pediatrician insisted they were "germ carriers". We switched pediatricians and got a much more reasonable doctor who said take him out but just not to crowded places. And, she said this was as much for our sanity too!

Life goes on! Particularly if it's #2 or 3! I'll need to drop my dd off at school every day, run errands, etc. I just plan on using a sling or Ergo to keep germs away, make sure to wash my hands, etc. Taking baby to those ped appointments (GERM CITY) is more dangerous than a store!
