Some friends booked a girls weekend and we are booked at a spa. I need to call because I'm afraid their robes won't fit me. 2/3x in tops. - mainly worried about the chest closing and not being too tight around everywhere. But I also have really bad psoriasis. Patches everywhere. Once had a nurse/anesthesiologist ask if they were burns.
Is it weird not call and ask if they are comfortable with psoriasis during a massage? Or if they have plus robes , I bet they don't but maybe they can give me a mens robe? It's a nice 5 star rated resort type place. I'm probably not their normal clientele |
The robes are usually unisex with limited sizes and your concern that they won’t have one that will fit is very real unfortunately. I’m about the same size and have definitely worn robes at spas that didn’t really close and I couldn’t walk around in ![]() |
I would call and ask if they would recommend a specific type of massage — or recommend against a specific treatment— for someone with psoriasis, and let them take it from there. That way they can assign someone who’s comfortable with it, or even recommend a different type of treatment if, say, the massage oils might be potentially irritating. I probably wouldn’t ask about a robe, but would expect the. To have a range of sizes. Maybe you could take one of your own with you as a backup option?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry that has happened. That is my biggest fear going. Is that I'll have to leave or won't be able to walk around with an open robe and I'll be embarrassed. My friends are all smaller and typically sized people. Thanks I'll call tomorrow. I just read the online brochure and says call or at time of booking mention health concerns or limitations and any special requests. A friend booked it so I wasn't able to. But I should get on calling. |
I hope they have a range of sizes and would see me and grab the appropriate one? So it's not a big deal when we get there or they give me a too small one and I have to swap it out. Ugh I just realized I'll need to change in front of everyone in the locker room. For facials do you keep your clothes on at these resorts?? Any treatments I wouldn't need a robe for? |
Most places I’ve been, it’s “do whatever you’re comfortable with” as far as clothing (within reason). Obviously you’re not going to be able to stay in a robe during a typical massage, or body wrap. However, you should be fine to do so for a facial, manicure, or pedicure. Also many places I’ve been to offer what is billed as a Thai style massage which incorporates a lot of stretching/guided yoga etc. so you’re instructed to wear yoga/loungewear type items for those because you’ll be on a mat on a floor for much of it. Also, second what everyone else says about calling to ask. You can even ask if the products they use in the various treatments are psoriasis-friendly (I don’t suffer myself so not sure if this is a thing but if so it’s certainly a valid inquiry). |
Thank you for this. Unfortunately they don't offer any massage like that but I will call to ask. Funny enough I'm not worried about me or the lotions. I don't want the massauese to be horrified or anything. Or think it's contagious. I want to be fair to this person |
On the sizing, I get it. But you should go and enjoy yourself. I suggest calling to see if they have bigger sizes. They can probably write a note into your reservation for when you sign in. If they don’t have one that fits, use towels to create a robe underneath your robe. Someone once suggested that to me in a spa and it really works. Have fun! |
This won’t help right now, but I also have psoriasis and no topical medications worked. They stained my clothes, smelled awful for hours, and were expensive for tiny tubes. I went to a dermatologist, they prescribed Tremfya (before all their commercials started) and it cleared up within about four months, by about 85%. |
OP, I’m sorry these thoughts are keeping you from looking forward to thie trip. Do you have your own robe you can bring just in case? Definitely ask about the massage, I personally, prefer facials which may feel a little more comfortable for you. |
Or just bring your own robe. |
I was going to recommend a facial too and I find that they offer a bigger bang for the buck! While great in the moment, when a massage is over, it's just over. Facials at least have a little lasting power. Perhaps you could spring for an add-on foot and hand massage so you get the best of both worlds, assuming those areas are okay with you. |
Bring your own robe.
Vent: It is extremely annoying that the spas and salons haven't figured out yet that they are leaving out a significant swathe of paying customers because they resolutely fail to have on hand the robes and cover-ups that will fit their larger sized customers. My best friend refuses to go to the spa with me for the same reason as you, OP, that the robe won't fit. It makes me so mad!!! Not at her but at the idiocy of the spas and salons. Even my hair salon has wraps that are much too small for most 2-3x women. Why don't they purchase the things in two sizes? The women who have to wear the smaller ones look so embarassed and unhappy. I don't blame them when the easy solution is for the salon to buy the right sizes. Aaaargh!!! |
I would bring my own. |
Bring your own robe. Get something that looks kind of spa-like (so no dramatic prints or loud color). Try to enjoy it, OP! The facial you can do in a robe. Same with manicure or pedicure, if they offer that. Maybe they have foot massages and scalp massages you’d be more comfortable with, if that seems more appealing. Some spas have meditation spaces, which can be nice. I get where you’re coming from because I’m probably the largest person in my friend group, and that’s not such a good feeling. But at the spa they see all kinds of bodies there. Just own it and try to have fun. You’re there with friends and everyone just wants to relax and be a little pampered. |
