Alexandria - City Council Dynamic Question

Anonymous
I was watching the city council meeting last week about the lights on the sports fields and caught a very odd interaction between Mayor Wilson and Councilmember Chapman. It seemed like Chapman had more to say/ask but Wilson cut him off by saying "later". It seems like Chapman is often talked down to and taken for granted by the mayor. Why?

Because King Wilson said so!

Why does Chapman put up with it? He's the one who grew up here, has a business in town and yet he seems to be dismissed by Wilson repeatedly. And it looks like Wilson's housing/zoning plan that is coming may kill Chapman's business.

I don't understand why Chapman allows himself to be treated this way.

Wilson is really cocky. I once contacted him as a constituent about something and his response was very dismissive. He is often very rude and disrespectful to his colleagues on the Council.

Look at the Mayor’s Facebook and Twitter - he really thinks he is a feudal lord.

I agree on Wilson's attitude and he treats everyone in this way (council members, voters etc). I understand that.

I do wonder about why Chapman allows himself to be repeatedly disrespected and talked down to in that way.

Same. I often agree with Wilson’s policy positions (especially compared with his most vocal opponents). That being said, I am put off by his attitude and how he treats people who do disagree with him (including on social media where I find his “engagement” to be generally off-putting). Wilson’s comments when responding to critics are sometimes dense (either because of a lack of intelligence or because he purposely acts like he does not understand his critics so he does not need to respond to them).

We call the mayor Justin Case in our neighborhood This means just in case we need him for anything that we can’t get done dealing directly with city offices.

We wanted two stop signs installed and had them done in a few days. Friends in Arlington saw a woman killed in an intersection near their house and it will take months for Arlington to decide to do a study about stop signs.

We kinda wrote Justin off as a weenie and toady for the DelRaynians and the bicyclists. He is stupid and actually has played his biracial card thinking that would help him replace Don Beyer in Congress

He basically orders supplies for Amtrak and that seems to be his intellectual level.

We basically ignore him because we don’t need him

A very accurate summary.

Np. The few times I emailed Wilson with an issue I found him prompt to respond and willing to engage. Sorry to hear others have less positive experiences.

Why do you think he dismisses some of his city council colleagues? I get the urge to be dismissive of Amy Jackson but I don't understand John Chapman. Chapman is the one with generations of roots in Alexandria, he owns a business here and frankly, he's carried Wilson's water on issues taking certain votes so that Wilson doesn't have to.

Chapman shouldn't have to put up with what I saw at the hearing. It's was so disrespectful and unprofessional.

His job and how he got it seems to be an open secret among Alexandria Democrats.

Hm. I was wondering what his next step/end game was...

He has zero chance of getting Beyer's seat. He probably did have a chance once up on a time but that moment has passed. He's mayor for life.

If anyone from Alexandria will be in the running for it, it's Gaskins.

He could never be worse than the wife beater, Jim Moran.
