License plate covers

Anonymous
Has anyone else noticed more people using tinted license plate covers, ostensibly to conceal their plate number? I'm in the DC area and it seems like every other car has a tinted cover making license plates unreadable.

DC cops have been ticketing this more frequently. Buyer beware.

I have electronic one that is an LCD glass cover. Normally it’s totally clear but if you hit the button, it instantly turns opaque gray. It only stays opaque while you’re holding the button down, so the rest of the time the plate is clear and readable.

Great for dealing with speed cameras. Just hit the button as soon as you see the camera and release it when you are out of range.

Got it from Amazon, about $270.

+1 I'm for this. Speed and red light cameras are civil rights violations.

Uhhh what happens if you didn’t notice the camera or are in an unfamiliar area?

I think all of these people are driving around with empty bike racks are also doing so to obscure their license plates.

In most places, if not all places, it is illegal to cover your plate with anything, even if it's clear. You're giving the police an excuse to pull you over whenever they want.

Very, very, very illegal.

Yes, and I’m fine with that.

Then you get a ticket because you’re not paying attention. And you should. Because if you’re going to drive fast, you should be paying attention. If not, you should catch a ticket.

I’ve had that clear glass cover on my plate for 3 years and haven’t been pulled over once. It’s even been through DC inspection twice now and passed both times without even a mention.

Clear glass cover is different than tinted which is what is being discussed.

My clear glass cover turns opaque gray at the push of a button. That’s what we’re talking about here.

Please keep up.

For what reason? Does one purchase this intending to commit crime?
