Apple Pie in a Grocery Bag

Anonymous
My MIL is insistent on trying out a friend's recipe for Thanksgiving where you bake the apple pie inside of a brown grocery bag. Has anyone ever heard of this? I have visions of her burning down my kitchen. I'm not an anxious person in general but this has me a little on edge LOL.

It's a stupid gimmick. Tell her she can try that in her own kitchen.

Tell her no way that is happening in your kitchen, and she’s welcome to try it in her own home.

I have some brown parchment paper bags that are supposed to be used for roasting meats. I haven't had the nerve to try them but I wonder if that's the brown paper bag that's supposed to be used for the pie. I would not allow anyone to put a regular grocery bag in my oven. I'm pretty sure it's going to catch fire.

If she wants to control browning that’s why god invented tinfoil.

These are the parchment paper bags. Show this to your MIL.

Is she trying to reproduce Sharon's famous pie?

I know someone who bakes a ham in a brown paper bag. She has done it for years and no fires.

I’ve seen videos online of people cooking whole turkeys like this. I have zero interest in it, but no fires as far as I know.

Here's a recipe for cooking an apple pie in a brown paper bag. It states that the original recipe used a grocery bag but this version replaces the bag with parchment paper for safety.

Grocery bags were never meant to be food safe. They have ink, glue, and other impurities that shouldn't be roasted into your food. Use parchment instead.

I know it's a thing but the pie in that picture looks like it's in a waxed paper bag and not a grocery bag. Every recipe I found for this has replaced the grocery bag with something that's meant for food cooked in an oven. In the end, I doubt the bag is doing much for the pie except making it a big soggier than usual.

From the bottom of this recipe:
"Original Baking Directions:
Place pie in a large brown supermarket bag on its side, not standing up, making sure the bag does not touch the top or sides of the pie. Carefully fold over the opening of the bag and staple it closed to seal the pie in. Bake at 425 for one hour. It will smell like the bag is burning in the first 30 minutes of cooking, but then you can smell the pie cooking so don't worry! "

Why do I feel like this recipe would give the pie a smokey smell?

So stupid. There's truly no hope for humanity.

To be fair my MIL and mother are likely also stupid enough to try something like this.

Just get her some of the parchment bags to scratch this itch of hers.
