The DNF (Did Not Finish) Thread

Anonymous
A comment on another thread where someone said they read over half a book before they could get into it had me wondering:

Do you DNF?
How early have you DNFed?
How far have you gotten and bailed?
What are some of your DNF books?

I DNF all the time. I have so many books on my to-read list that I don't see any point in hanging with a book that's not catching my interest or where characters are likeable. I get most books from the library (physical or ebooks), so that makes it a no-brainer. Most books get 50 pages. Once in a while, I'll hang in there for 100.

I recently DNFed Our Crooked Hearts. It had good reviews, but the author decided mutilated bunnies was interesting. Nope.

Also DNFed the newest Outlander book. That author jumped the shark several books ago for me and I succumbed to the hype. The reviews are very mixed on that one. I'm glad I didn't give it much of my time.

Midnight's Children. I really tried with that one.

Lincoln in the Bardo.

The Priory of the Orange Tree. I felt like I'd been reading forever and was only halfway through.

Caste by Wilkerson

I really wanted to like it as much as I did The Warmth of Other Suns but I just didn't.

Gentleman in Moscow
I always used to finish but this last year have decided there are too many good books to not enjoy it.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley (was charmed by another book but this one wasn't it for me)

Gentleman in Moscow (read after Rules of Civility which I loved)

Mary Jane (a book rec'd to me after I said I loved Daisy and the Six)

However, I do find that I have more patience listening to books than reading them. Especially non-fiction.

Man so many. Some because I'm just not in the mood, others because they are terrible.

Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill

The Hacienda by Isabel Canas

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

The Ruins by Scott Smith

Books 2-5 of the Lunar Chronicles (book 1 was good)

A ton more, but those are the ones that recently come to mind

I’ve tried The Paris Apartment twice, but DNF. I tried Mary Jane, also DNF.

One of the Glennon doyle books. I realized pretty quickly how terrible I thought it was.

The Hacienda is on my list! Should I not believe the hype?

Don’t go back! I forced myself to finish The Paris Apartment…and I was furious how it ended.

It moved too slow. My sister finished and gave it two stars. She gave me permission to quit (we were reading together).
