Metabolism Fallen Off a Cliff at 39- Any Supplements that Work?

Anonymous
See header-- the slow creep has begun, and I need it to stop. Its mostly waistline, but everything is just getting a little bit bigger. I really just need to be able to wear my clothes and lose 5-10 lbs. I am constantly targeted by ColonBroom, Happy Mammoth, Sakara, Provitalize etc. Do any of these supplmenets actually work? I eat healthy, walk three miles a day, but just need a little boost. Give me your supplement reccs that actually work please!

Your metabolism doesn’t inherently decline with age, it turns out. It’s your declining muscle mass associated with age that’s causing the problem. Start lifting.

^^ This. You need to start lifting, and lifting heavy.

OP here -- to lose weight? I believe you, I just don;t know whwre to start. I have the Peloton app though. Just choose a strength training option? Any suggestions for programming would be awesome, thank you! (Also, I still want a supplement...)

You start with bloodwork, notably thyroid hormones.

Hypothyroidism is very common in the middle-aged set, and symptoms include weight gain and fatigue.

I know for a fact I am mildly hypothyridic, at least I was a few years ago. I imagine its gotten worse. How does one remedy this for weight loss?

Keeping in mind Im not overweight, 135 and 5'6, I just want to be under 130 for clothing purposes.

Yes. Supplement coffee or herbal tea in place of food, particularly snacks. You just need to eat less

Even if you need to take thyroid meds, it likely won’t make you lose that 5-10 lbs. Your body is just requiring less food/energy now than it used to.

Stope blaming age and metabolism for weight gain. Metabolism doesn't change overnight when you turn 39 or 40 or whatever you are telling yourself. Yes, we lose muscle as we age, but this is a very slow decline that again doesn't change anything overnight.

Now what does change as we age- Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) or rather the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise, that is calories burned through non exercise specific activities. When I was in my 20's I lived in the city and walked a lot, went out dancing with friends and so forth. In my 30's I had 2 young kids so I walked a ton with them, spent a lot of time at the playground and had to physically care for them. In my 40's I still exercise/go to the gym but my job is more sedentary, I spend more time in my car driving my kids around than I do talking them on walks and physically caring for them.

We don't want to admit it but our habits do change over time.

Supplements are a joke and literally just pissing your money away. Instead focus on your diet (eating healthy is not enough, even healthy food has calories, watch portions) and work on getting more activity into your day.

Unless you have other symptoms associates with hypothyroidism, enough so that you need medication, it is unlikely this is to blame for your weight or that your sole symptom is weight gain.

Why?

if losing weight was as simple as taking a pill we'd all be thin.

Hi OP - I would start with the peloton app since you already have it. If you don’t have dumbbells at home, choose a body weight workout to start and see how you like it. Then you can move on to weights! But even just doing the basics like push-ups, lunges and squats without additional weight should help you see if you enjoy it. You could also try cutting calories but that part is less fun!

Have you tried eating less? It’s not hard to lose 5 pounds. Come on.

You don't need to lift heavy. Reading op, hypertrophy does not seem like the goal. Light with high reps will tone and build muscle if OP hasn't been lifting and will help.

You could still get your thyroid checked. It's not difficult to take synthroid and it might help your metabolism. But you will want to keep up with exercise and watching what you eat.
