“Shamed” for Thanksgiving contribution to school

Anonymous
My DD’s school has partnered with a local food bank to create Thanksgiving boxes of food for family’s in the neighborhood in need. The food bank sends a very specific list and each family can volunteer to bring a specific item. Our family signed up for cream cheese. I dropped them off at the school this morning at the front desk - as requested - and the front desk administrator opened the bag and goes “oh you bought generic?” Then sighed.

I use store brand cream cheese and honestly bought the same for this as for me. I just said, “yes, I like this brand” and smiled.

Did I break some code? Are you supposed to buy name brand for these things?

People suck. That’s all I can say.

No, she was rude. Her comment did not deserve a response. This is one of those moments where you say, “excuse me?” and see if they have enough shame to not repeat themself.

I'm super curious if this is a public or private school, but either way try to ignore the comments from the front-office admin. This is why people don't volunteer.

Did this really happen? I can’t imagine someone saying that. If they did, I would probably explain that they mispronounced “thank you” and then shoot an email to their superior about it.

seriously, with the price of cream cheese these days, they are lucky you contributed at all!

If I'm using it for baking, I always buy generic.

Yes, really happened. The front desk person has long been the discussion of lack of tact. Which is ironic considering her job.

WTH kind of a dumb comment is that? Cream cheese is the same regardless. People that buy "name brand" of most things are just dumb, and I'm guessing that this person falls into that category.

Definitely next time say "excuse me?" and lift an eyebrow. Practice it in the mirror, if you do it right it will wilt most people.

She was very rude. You did nothing wrong.

You should have LOL'ed and said "Yes, I bought generic because I am helping a FOOD BANK. For the same amount of money I can help more families.

Another reason to not get brand-name products is to prevent staff at the office here and the food bank from pilfering it. I want my contribution to reach people in need.

However, I wonder why you would make such a rude and unnecessary remark and how is it any of your business?"

Bring her these next time you see her, tell her they are name brand.

I truly cannot wrap my head around an admin at a public school shaming someone for donating a generic brand. Imagine being someone on a limited income, but still agreeing to donate, and then getting hit with a shitty comment like that. You should seriously complain to the higher ups about it.
