We still rent in Arlington and can buy within 45 min drive or so of the city...open to moving further out in VA or to MD but thinking we may want to go the private route as we haven't been thrilled with APS so far.
With that said - are they ALL an arm and a leg? We probably make too much to qualify for aid but, as you know, in this city, high incomes don't translate into easy living. We have two kids so can't be spending 80k/year on school
Do any fit the bill? (no pun intended) |
| Yep. If you refuse to send the kids to a religious school be prepared to spend an arm and a leg. |

Google is your friend.
Flint Hill the Hill school Wakefield |
Flint Hill and the Hill are not cheap. |
| Does not exist if you want to be reasonably close to DC. You need to go really far out…. |
|
The schools listed above are not affordable. Flint Hill is $47K.
OP, what ages? There seems to be more options for K-6 or K-8. Merritt Academy in Fairfax is about $21K. Pinecrest in Annandale is $17K or so. I don't know much about these schools, but one of my daughters had a friend pre-COVID who was at Merritt and liked it. There might be other options a little farther out. Good luck. The private schools here are either secular or semi-affordable, rarely both. |
Yeah, what are ridiculous list. The only difference between Flint Hill and the other expensive private schools in the area is that Flint Hill isn’t as good academically. This is a really stupid list that does not help OP at all. |
| Schools are expensive to run. That is why you see religious schools with lower tuition (they are supported by their parish/diocese/donations) and more expensive independent schools. Not only is it hard/impossible to find an inexpensive independent school - but you pay for what you get. I would not leave APS and go to a cheap private school (unless Catholic). And this is coming from someone that thinks that APS has issues and put their kids in an expensive independent school. |
An arm and a leg is relative. What price range are you trying to find? Schools in the $20s are less than the $30k+ range, but they can be found. Also, not sure what your HHI is, but the HHIs that receive financial aid in this area are shocking. I would definitely suggest doing some searches on this board to see some of those figures. |

This question has been asked a bazillion times on this thread, but I'll bite.
If you go into MD -- Indian Creek in Crownsville is less than $30k/year and has a sliding scale for tuition. |
Grace Episcopal in Kensington also has a sliding scale. |
And it’s religious, yes? |
Ha.. fair point... Definitely not paying attention this morning.. or afternoon now I guess. |
| Secular private school isn't for poors |
Cheaper than my daycare !! |
